SEGA's ambitious free-to-play MMO, Kingdom Conquest [Free], a title that combines dungeon crawling and the city building of a traditional strategy game, is now available in the US. The price is, of course, free. Cost factors in via the purchase of Charge Points, which is currency that can be used to speed up resource gathering or to buy little bonuses us non-paying peasants in the world don't have.

Let's talk a bit about features, eh? Kingdom Conquest will allow you to team up with up to four other dudes on Edge, Wi-Fi or 3G in the dungeon crawling portion of the game. In these dungeons you'll be able to collect your standard fantasy fare and you'll be able to unlock over 100 types of monsters. You'll then be able to trade your loot with others if you so desire.

The strategy aspect, the city building, is a more solo-ish affair that'll have you building up a kingdom, forming alliances, and creating armies that can stomp other armies. The junk you get in the dungeons can be synthesized in some sort of crafting system for use in this portion of the game.

If you need a pal to play with, hit up our forum thread on the game. There are a couple of dudes in there looking for some playmates. I should note though, that according to a couple of user reports, you can solo this game. But like World of Warcraft or whatever, it ain't going to be easy as you progress.

Another Freemium "Hurry up and Wait" gameplay model..... No thanks.

    • TFEccles

      I couldn't agree more.

Wait, let me guess, you want companies to spend months and thousands (if not millions) to develop these games and give them to you for free?

*picks up jaw off the floor

      • TFEccles

You think Sega spent millions of dollars on this? Really?

The complaints about freemium games aren't based on the game not being free, but that their goal is to make you constantly spend money to keep playing, as opposed to just buying it once.

No. We want them to charge for the app because in order to get the same amount of content (at a paid game pace) from a paid game you'd have to spend hundreds in "premium" purchases. HUGE RIPOFF

      • Icybergie

MMOs needs to be freemium simply because there are wayyyyyyy too many cheapskates out there.

Making them a paid app will only cause the MMO to die overtime due to the lack of players.

And besides, it just speeds up processes. Just be patient.

This "Free"mium game so far is very nice with a ton of content. Best thing is your not required to pay a dime(and I dont plan on it) to progress in-game unless your impatient. With so many elements to the game all around, there is plenty of new stuff to keep you busy. I plan on keeping this for a while, so if your looking for friends to join. Do add me: Stro

    Typo in the title haha

looks like crap on the ipad :(

I'm sure it's a good fun for many, but I'm too old to wait around for things to grow, gifts to get, crops to flourish and fish to breed. I just want to play a traditional game -- without reading the words Freemium and Social gaming - ugh. Now back to 100 Rogues and Fargoal :-)

  • ieeeeeeeeeee!

I downloaded this on the iPad and its an eyesore at 2x. but most problematic it won't let me actually log in to play something about "this territory is full". Sounded compelling but x'ed this one quickly. Willing to revisit if it gets more polish.

  • juno

This actually a great freemium game

Wish these big game companies would hire people good at user interfaces. I'm spending almost all of my time trying to find things and stumbling around with things that should be easy. Like "Produce," where the hell is the Produce tab in Units? Can't make a new monster without tapping the Produce tab, but can't find it.

  • PARRANOYA

I get the "This territroy is full" message on all 4 terriitories and cannot move ahead.....broken game already! I erased it.

  • Steverd

Looks nice, but how is it compared to Pocket Legends, which I LOVE!

  • Smokecity

Territory is full. Patience is empty.

  • BlindsideDork

I got in no problem to a territory but I guess I am just not sure what is going on. Can you equip items? I keep getting these axes but no clue what to do with them.

Worse, feels like the Mage steals all the kills. Does it matter if you land the finishing blow or does everyone get the same XP no matter what?

I'm stuck on that quest as well - I've gone back and looked several times and even checked every button on the menu just in case it was a translation error. :/

  • Palenoue

Yup, it's another game designed by programmers who know nothing about user experience and approved by executives who know nothing about game play. You'd think a place as large as Sega would hire at least _one_ person who knows a little about how to make a game fun instead of frustrating. Maybe PopCap and Blizzard hired them all.

If anyone from Sega is reading this, good try, several good aspects to the game, but it's too frustrating to play for long. Too bad you won't listen to gamers like me, you might learn how to avoid these problems.

  • Nemukah

Good little game, only reasons why people can't get in it is because the server is full, so they released a 2nd server for other to play on, for those who could not get in the 1st server try it again with the 2nd server, its a game more or less you just play for an 10mins to an hour through out the day so there is no major commitment to it.

  • emi

Another game where you are forced to play as a guy after naming my character MsEvil...*sighs* I was tricked by the picture of the long haired character in the background of the app icon...

    • Palenoue

And I bet you they hold entire production meetings where they spend the entire time trying to figure out why they can't attract more female players ;-)
