Last week we posted the preview trailer of XMG Studio's Cannon Cadets [$1.99] which has since been released on the App Store. Riding on the undeniably successful coattails of Angry Birds [99ยข / Free / HD], Cannon Cadets provides similar physics-powered gameplay with some new twists that make it worth checking out if you're like many people who have beaten every level in Angry Birds and now just anxiously await the next content update.

Gameplay is fairly similar in that you're shooting things at various makeshift forts filled with enemies, only instead of birds and pigs, Cannon Cadets is home to robots and evil monkeys. By pulling back on a cannon you can shoot one of the cadets in to the robot base, and similarly, each level is completed by destroying all the robots. Gameplay is spiced up a bit with levels that are a bit more puzzle oriented, with moving obstacles to deal with and other physics gimmicks that go together like an odd Rube Goldberg machine.

One thing that I like a lot about Cannon Cadets is the secret levels that are unlocked by hitting various targets in the game world. I thought the golden egg portion of Angry Birds was really awesome, and this just takes that a step further in providing some actual incentive to finding the secret levels to play them instead of just filling out a golden egg page for the sake of completion.

Cannon Cadets comes loaded with 80 levels, and there's even talk of a level editor on the way via future updates and an iPad version. The game hasn't swayed me from my love of Angry Birds as I think Angry Birds flat out just has more character to it and a better physics engine, but Cannon Cadets is totally a competent supplement with similar gameplay and more than enough content to keep you busy between Angry Birds updates.

I am not 100% sure but isn't that song from the youtube video a 8bit version one of the Charlie the Unicorn Songs? I think Candy Mountain.

Fragger is a similar game to Angry Birds as well. I've found that to be a good app while I'm waiting for an Angry Birds update.

Quite a few of the levels in the trailer look more like Ragdoll Blaster than Angry Birds.

    • drelbs

This plays more like Angry Birds as you pull back to launch your cadet, and are trying to wipe out baddies and free your fellow cadets.

I'm not sure what people are talking about with the music - I get game music in level - but I do agree that the farts/burps could be toned down a lot...

The game is not quite as polished as Angry Birds. Or Roly Poly Cannon (Physics Gamebox) for that matter. But it does offer both more of the same and some variety, and I can say I'm enjoying it this afternoon in amongst games of The Incident. ;)

I am enjoying The Incident. I seem to like your taste in games. What else have you been playing lately?

Does this game have high(er) resolution graphics for the iPhone 4's Retina Display?

I'm tempted but the whole farting thing is sort of turning me off to the game. At $.99 it would've been an impulse buy but a dollar more and I like to know what I'm getting. I've read that the physics are both great and not great. A lite version would help me decide.

Is the level editor confirmed? Source? Any chance they're working on updating the audio? Also read there's bad slow down. I guess I'll wait for either a lite version or a drop to $.99

Thanks for the review Eli! To answer a few questions that have come up,
      - level editor is definitely coming. We're just wrapping up the development on that and will be submitting it to Apple for approval soon.
      - in the mean time we are submitting an update that will give you the option of muting the game sound and playing your own music. More sound updates will come down the road.
      - Retina Display update will some with the next update, and an iPad version hot on the heels of that one.

      Have fun playing!

Thanks. Well the info about the level editor just swayed my mind from on the fence to buying. I love angry birds but have played the levels to death.

Thanks Patti. Will you remain on this board welcoming feedback?

      • http://xmgstudio.com Patti from XMG

Absolutely! We're always open to and welcome feedback and ideas for our games. And I can assure you that our developers take the feedback very seriously and are already working on some other updates to address user feedback.

Will the level editor be a free update?

      • http://xmgstudio.com Patti from XMG

        Hi James,

We want to make the community a vibrant and busy place and we hope by including the level builder and community in with the price of the game (so not an additional IAP) we'll get a lot of people building and sharing their own levels.

James - I didn't even consider that. Its a really good question. Maybe I'll hold off.

Just got it and played a few levels. I think the game has potential but it really needs a lit of work in the sound department. I am playing on an iPhone 4, and other than the 8-bit theme I have no sounds..at all. Nothing. I think it takes away from the game experience when you don't have ambient sounds or impact effects. Seems like an odd choice for this game. Like with Angry Birds you have the birds chriping and the pigs squealing. But this is just silence. I could try using my own music but I still wouldn't have any kind of impact or explosion effects. On

No personality, very little humor, bad physics engine - feels like shooting paper balls, and the fact that projectiles become obstacles is very annoying. Needs a lot of polish to even approach Angry Birds.
