While the tower defense section of the App Store is nearly just as packed as match three's and line drawers, it's hard to not appreciate a game from even the most saturated genre that puts a new spin on things. Developer Tall Chair is putting players in charge of the defense of Undeadwood, a town which unsurprisingly has a zombie problem. In Cowboys vs Zombies, instead of the typical path that creeps snake around in front of your towers in most tower defense games, players hire cowboys to defend the roof of a particular building along what presumably is the main street of Undeadwood with a camera system that pans up and down the street instead of the standard overhead view.

According to the developers' description of the game, the zombies will attack each of your buildings, and deciding which to defend, which to rebuild, and when to fallback will be vital parts of the strategy involved in Cowboys vs Zombies. Check out the following gameplay trailer to see how this all looks in action:

According to the Cowboys vs Zombies Facebook page, the game was submitted to Apple on Monday night. Assuming there aren't any issues with the approval process, Cowboys vs Zombies should be available very soon.

    TD has become a really broad category, actually—and gives rise to some very fun ideas!

    From the trailer, it appears to either be a universal app or perhaps there is another version for iPad. Can anyone confirm this?

      Bell,

      I work at Tall Chair with Scott. We are making a separate version for iPad because the increased size would make it not down-loadable by cell connection. However, you can play the iPhone version on iPad in 2x mode, and it's not too fuzzy. The iPad version will look better.

    Isn't Popcap expected to release a 'Cowboys vs Zombies' style game soon?

    Hmm- that 3D camera looks like it will be difficult to control but I'll give it a shot (assuming priced nicely).

    What about Gundead Defense? That's a damn good tower defense, and it is also Cowboys and Zombies. This kinda looks like a poorly made 3D knockoff...

    • thebleeptruth

      Wouldn't really call it a knockoff, although the similarities are stark. But yeah Gundead Defense is a pretty decent game which I believe was unappreciated or maybe just didn't garner any enough attention.

    I absolutely love that the town is called Undeadwood, but zombies and another tower defense game?

    • psyc

      Yeah totally. Zombies have become a really overused theme in entertainment period over the last 5 or so years and pairing it with what's probably #2 in the most saturated genre for games on the app store just makes me not want to even give it a chance.

    I love the way it says "Unique tower defense game" immediately before it says "Plenty of zombie killin' action". That's a grand and proper use of irony right there, folks.

    Hi all...

    I'm the Creative Director at Tall Chair, Inc. I just wanted to say thanks for showing interest in our game - we're extremely excited about it and I think you're all going to play the hell out of it.

    I know there's been a lot of zombie games that have been coming out recently, and to those of you who are disparaging this fact I only have this to say:

    "If you're not preparing yourself for the impending Zombie Apocalypse, then you're preparing yourself to be an entree in the Brain Buffet..."

    Seriously though, we're very excited about this game and we are really looking forward to its release, and hearing everyone's feedback once you've all had a chance to check it out.

    • thebleeptruth

      Very very interested. I'll be getting the iPad version. Hope it's only a $1 more expensive than the iPhone version.

    Looks nice; essentially a straight path TD, where the emplacements are attacked, rather than passed.
    Doesn't look to be much feedback as to health of either zombies or buildings though. Nor is it obvious which are targeted, and which are hit.
    Hopefully there's some upgrading or levelling system?

    @Googlyhead:

    You bring up some really important feedback. Right now we don't have the health of the zombies as something that is displayed on the screen. We talked about it but made the decision to cut the display of damage in order to optimize the gameplay more - we can give you more zombies to kill that way.
    The building health can be seen when you grab the Repair icon and hover it over a building, which gives the player more to do than just sit back and watch the cowboys blast zombies (which is also awesome). Also, the buildings will flash when they get hit, and when they get severely damaged they will actually show some destruction and start flashing red to alert you that they need some repair lovin'.

    Every cowboy has 2 level of upgrades - you start by hiring a Cowboy, then you promote that Cowboy to Deputy, and you promote a Deputy to Marshall.

    Hope this answers some of your questions!

    @Richard:

    I'm happy to give out a hint: It is often better to deputize existing cowboys than it is to hire brand new ones. The promotions make a BIG difference in crucial stats such as rate of fire, range, and of course damage.

    Also, we are planning on having a special one-day sale the day of launch for $.99, and after that we're offering the game at the full price of $2.99.

    @Everyone:
    We have a mailing list that we are generating to help us spread the word on launch day as soon as we get a firm date from Apple. To join our mailing list, you can go to our website and sign up here:

    I swear to you we are not going to send you any news that is not directly related to CvZ, and we're not some crazy spammer email-selling gold farming psychos. We just want to let as many people as possible know about our game when it officially launches.
