The fine folks at Cowboy Rodeo are putting their port of 1992 Amiga classic Pinball Dreams free today and despite being a nearly 20 year old game, Pinball Dreaming: Pinball Dreams [Free] offers up some great pinball action, even a year and a half after it's initial release. From Blake Patterson's original review:

I am a huge fan of the original and its various sequels and, years ago, spent days playing them on various Amigas.  I can say with authority that the iPhone version is actually more enjoyable than the Amiga original.  All of the nice elements of the original are here, but in a far more convenient (pocketable) package.  What's more, while the iPhone and Amiga feature the same horizontal pixel resolution, the iPhone's display is twice as tall (pixel-wise) as the Amiga's, and so only slight vertical panning of the table is needed to track the ball on the iPhone (where the vertical panning in the Amiga version was extreme).

If you're a pinball fan and have somehow not already bought Pinball Dreams or tried the lite version, then right now is an excellent time to see what you've been missing. The “video game” feel may turn off some real life pinball table purists, but at the time of it's original Amiga release it was considered to be quite revolutionary and is incredibly fun in it's own right.

If you enjoy Dreams, the sequel Pinball Fantasies [$5.99] is available as well. With 4 tables in each game you're getting a grand total of 8 different tables for 6 bucks. Plus, with this increased support of Cowboy Rodeo comes increased odds that we'll see the third game in the series, Pinball Illusions, ported over sometime down the line. On any account, for a game that has never dropped below $3.99, Pinball Dreams is a must-download during this free promotion.

Pinball games need to be on the ipad. I like to see the whole table at all times.

The best pinball machine is the one you have with you :) This one fits in a pocket and lets you see almost the whole table.

I like the choice of retro vs. updated graphics. (The game is still retro either way, but I wanted the classic Amiga experience! Actually, pixel-doubling on the iPad would be no bad thing in that regard.)

The menu and options are puzzling to me. I tap around in the scoreboard and eventually I can manage to pause, quit, get to settings, etc., but I don’t know how I’m doing it. Double-taps? Invisible buttons

True, I will try it on the ipad :)

"The best pinball machine is the one you have with you."

This is the smartest thing that I have ever seen in print.

I tip my hat to you, good sir.

In portrait mode on the iPhone you get to see just about the whole table. The scrolling in Pinball Dreams is totally minimal - like 8 pixels or something. (It's like, way back when it was made for Amiga, they had the iPhone in mind all the time.) :)

I remember playing this on my Sega GameGear. It was fun then. Feels a bit dated now compared to some of the other pinball games out there, but still fun. I definitely wouldn't pay $4-5 for it (maybe $2), but of course free is always good.

Not to rain on your parade...
I'd have repented if I had bought this ever for a single cent.

I have Matmi's multiball pinball & THT is awesome.

However, I am Thankful to Amiga for giving out a game for free which they really din't have to :)

I played these on my Amiga 500 back in the day. I bought this for the iPhone (and now my iPad, too) when it last went on sale. I think they did a great job on this. At the low, low price of free, this is a no-brainer. Just go get it!

I'm waiting for somebody to port Slam Tilt :-)

    • TKO

There have been many many requests on the forums for Dreams and Fantasies for Slam Tilt to be done as well. Unfortunately Cowboy Rodeo aren't in contact with the copyright holders of that one, nor do they have the source-code and assets. :|

On the bright side, they still have the source+assets for Pinball Illusions, and the quality of that one is damn close to Slam Tilt. (I like them both equally) So you'll get to see that one at least.

If only there was someone around here who knows the Slam Tilt guys who could put them in touch with Cowboy Rodeo to port it. *sigh*
