Today Apple sent out a press release announcing that it sold over 300,000 iPads in the US the first day in its Apple Stores. Also, over a million apps were downloaded from the App Store that day. Which is not surprising since a lot of developers worked hard to make sure their app was ready for launch day. Even the iBookstore had some big numbers to share with over 250,000 ebooks being downloaded the first day.

If the release of the iPad didn’t drum up enough excitement the second piece of big news out of Apple today will. Members of the media have received invites to an April 8th press conference starting at 10am Pacific about the future of the iPhone OS.

With the press conference only a few days away it doesn’t give me much time to get my wish list of features together. My fingers are crossed for multitasking.

Ipad is such a dissapointment, it would be super amazing and successful if it started at 300 rather than 500

    • FlawlessCowboy

I take it you haven't got an iPad then? ;)

    • SalsaMD

not a very compelling statement if your gripe is price alone...

he totally doesn't have an ipad

its absolutely amazing in so many ways

      • greg

I agree. To me it isn't worth 500 dollars. no flash, no multitasking (though that may change with 4.0)

    • Sambo110

Somewhere said to "not judge it before you get to use it. It's not magic, but it's close." Plus it sold 300 thousand in one day, and that's only in the US.

      • Dran

Sales arent indicative of quality, or else Myley Cyrus and Twilight would be the best movies of all time.

The ipad is great at what is does, which is allowing people to consume media in a comfortable, user-friendly, slick way. But at 500+ its still a very steep asking price when nowadays you can get noebooks and laptops for 300+, and they can do way more than the iPad can.

    • mike

I take it you haven't got a credit card then?

Wonder if they will make available the FM chip inside. Radio would be cool!

Agreed. It totally boggles my mind how you can't listen to radio on such a 'snappy' device!

Who is still listening to classic FM radio?
In times of hundreds of thousands of web stations?
        Try the free Radio.fx :)

True, and this IS about the new iPhone, so fair enough. I was actually thinking about my iPod Touch, and with not much wifi around an FM chip would be handy.

      • Skavinger

Luckily ... I hate the smegma that's played on the radio ... Pandora, Slacker Radio, that's how I listen to "radio."

        FM is dead to me.

what's up with multitasking anyway... I don't see the point. do you need to listen to music while you check your emails while you're playing canabalt while you're browsing the internet ? dawg ?

    • Miffy

Or maybe so you can do things like Text without having to close a game and then load it all back up again. I mean it makes sense seeing as all the other phones have it, why don't apple give it an option? Leave it off by default for the nubs so the more advanced user can turn it on.

      • Johnny

Exactly! It's one of the reasons why my phone is jailbroken. I can't live without it. The other being able to play Advanced Wars on my iPhone. :-)

      • http://www.stormchild.net Stormchild

This is exactly what some limited multitasking would be very useful for.

      • jon

The problem with multi-tasking is that developers would abuse it. Next thing you know your iPhone or iPod Touch or iPad is slow as all get out and you've got forum where people complain about unresponsive iPhones.

I don't trust developers not to f--- up the works with multi-tasking.

    • MisterDrgn

Yeah, I kinda agree. Most apps save your state anyway, so if you can make switching between apps (i.e., loading apps) fast, what do you need multitasking for?

      • Johnny

Because sometimes you need to have a program running in the background. A few examples, alarm program, internet radio, downloading something, skype etc.

      • Adams Immersive

I agree, multitasking is a buzzword that people think they want, when really they want certain FUNCTIONALITY, which may have many good solutions. Such as:

        1. Make state-saving and app-switching REALLY fast (store the state of the app/IM client better or more efficiently, or simply on faster hardware, so the app loads really fast wen you go back to it).

        2. Add a background audio service, allowing Pandora music or Skype call while using the Web or gaming.

Neither of those necessarily requires “true” multitasking (which, in fact, the iPhone OS already does). But whatever method is used, those are needs left to be met. (And I kind of hope for something MORE efficient than simply “more multitasking." Just like Push is better than multitasking for many purposes.)

      • http://justinsalsburey.com Jaysal

First off ... I agree with you ... For the most part.. But honestly they don't think they want it.. they really do... They just dont realize theirs other options out there... Like background audio.... etc. Multitasking would just cover all their bases in one shot...

sidebar- the main reason we havent seen multitasking yet is to prevent crashing and slow performance and there in the deterioration of the "apple experience" of everything "just working".... With a faster processor you'll definitely see your limited multi tasking... For that reason doubt they will add it before the new iphone... But it would be nice.

      • http://justinsalsburey.com Jaysal

Also .. the tagline suggests even though they are announcing 4.0... It probably wont be available until the new iphone comes out.. In which case i would say limited multi tasking is definitely happening.

I wouldn't hold your breathe for multitasking. I suspect we'll just see it caught up to the iPad with ebooks, Pages, etc.. I can't see them introducing something that would so greatly overshadow the hardware release.

    • Stephen

You think they are going to put Pages on the iPhone?

      hahaha

    • Ed

They will add many new features. That's why the iPad is using OS 3.2 - it had very few new features over the iPhone version. 4.0 will be available for both I'd guess, and people will be pissed off that they have to pay for it for the iPad.

Yes for Multi-Tasking, Fast SMS replies, Quick toggle of configuration options... in fact everything good about Jailbreaking should be in OS 4.0.

On and proper bluetooth headset support with remote controls... jeez, the list goes on. Trickle feed us Apple!

Folders or categories are a must. I'm sick of scrolling through 10 screens to find the app I want. Yes, I'm aware of the Spotlight feature and use it a lot. It's great. But the folders / categories metaphor makes it so much neater to organise your apps and games, as well as being much quicker, in practice, to find individual apps than either scrolling or Spotlight.

It's all well and good to have a brilliant new interface and way of getting to files, but with the sheer amount of apps and games you can store even on an 8gb iPhone, let alone the 32gb 3GS (and higher capacities should be expected in the next few months), how about Apple concede that the folder metaphor is actually a useful one.

Please let it include either: A LOT MORE PAGES, or some kind of folder system. I have a 64GB touch, there are only 10 full pages. Why have so much space and nothing to do with it? I am sick of picking and choosing which apps to keep. Hopefully the new firmware will let you delete the default "apps". I have a TOUCH not a phone, why is a slot of precious space wasted on "Contacts". I'm 16, I don't think I'll be needing "Stocks". That is ridiculous...

    • :o

I've only got an 8GB iPod Touch, and even I'm up to my 6th page, and half of that 8GB is music anyway.

My ideal springboard would be as it is now, with sliding up and down to different categories.

    • Mr. Gates

I think it's pretty pathetic how many people are still complaining about Flash support. Flash is dying. It just is. Face it. Most of the popular web is already switching to HTML5 so there isn't even much reason to complain anymore. So do yourself a favor, just focus all your complaining energy into stuff like multi-tasking.

Multitasking is so Overrated. I hope the Iphone 4g DOES NOT have it. There are radio apps in the apps store that play in the backround while your surfing the net anyway.

I hope apple focuses on serious upgrades for the Iphone 4G like a 720 HD screen and finally getting a flash player agreement going.

Lets focus on serious upgrades not stupid ones.

Folders. I want folders. I'm an avid gamer and so are my kids, and we share one iPod Touch, but we do NOT share the same taste in games. So between my puzzles and time management and adventure games, plus their tower defense and arcade and platform games, we have the whole gamut. We've filled up around 25 pages of games, obviously most of them hidden now, and the only time I can see them all is when I sync. What with free apps and free games being given away every, that number is just growing and growing and growing.

    • Lance

Yep, this is number one on my list also - the current limitation on number of visible apps is pretty embarrassing.

I think the dame you wrote, and here is my list.

-Flash, still is not dead and we will need it for a long time...
-Folder system, like categories but pulished and better os integration.
-Activate FM radio chip, because it is so easy and necesary.
-Multitask, i always have open a few apps in background, and i can switch betwen them really fast without close any of them.
    -Add more info on lockscreen.
-A shortcut to fast configuration options.
-Swype system and vibration on keyboard touch.
-in iPhone HD: front camera for videocall, skype, msn etc, better CPU and GPU, better batery life with solar and cinetic support, diferent colora and renovate desing like fake ones.

I pretty much have to have flash before I can dish out for one. I watch hulu on a daily basis.

I have a sweet notebook and PC for any real gaming and an iphone for goofing off while waiting in line or something, but I dont see how this can be marketed as a media device without being able to view hulu (or any of the other 1000s of websites).
