'Small World' Board Game Coming to iPad

posted April 2nd, 2010 3:35 PM EDT by Eli Hodapp in $4.99, Board, Games, iPad Games, Upcoming Games

Back when the iPad was first announced, one genre that it seemed people on our forums really wanted to see on the device was board games. A number have developers have answered the call, but one of the most interesting offerings we've seen so far is Days of Winder's Small World. Small World [App Store] is a fantasy-based world conquest game where players take turns playing the included races which cover the gamut of orcs, elves, and more to take over everything.

For more information about the game, you can either check out the overview on the Days of Wonder site or check oug this shockingly articulate kid named Hayden who does a surprisingly good job explaining everything you'd ever want to know about playing the board game in this video:

Small World has some serious board game streed cred', named Games Magazine's game of the year and selling close to 60,000 copies worldwide, Small World should be an excellent fit on the iPad. I realize it's getting cliche to say this game is also on the list of games I'm totally loading on my iPad, but, well, it is.

Saw this hidden gem a few days ago, and I have done a little research into it as well. This looks to be a really great Strategic -RISK type game for the iPad.. It's on my day one list as well (in fact its downloaded!!) Keep an eye on this one!

Never heard about this game, but now I'm tempted to go out and buy the actually board game. Looks really fun.

I forgot to mention the only draw back I see so far, is I can not find if the ipad version has computer AI or not. From what I read this will only be playable with two local players..

Online or Single player gameplay would seal the deal for most user I think. However since I bought it I will just have to wait.. I hate impulse shopping.

      • jeffyg3

Yeah, single player gameplay would definitely have been a must for me. I plan to play this game with someone else, but I definitely want to play this game with an AI when no one is here. I guess I'll have to wait for reviews.

...and too bad about Wesnoth no being a launch. Oh well, there's always the universal apps I got on the iPhone that are iPad optimized.

And Then! lol. Thanks for that Wmcwmc.

I had this board game recommended to me by a friend, and now I can try it out on the iPad for $5... well, $504. ;)

I'm also very interested in board games being played like this and maybe being augmented by an iPad, so I'm looking forward to see how they did with the mechanics of it. When does the 20" iPad come out?

@jeffyg3: It is fun! It also has a million-and-one cardboard tile bits in it ... which is a blessing and a curse. Opening the box makes me feel like a kid at Xmas. But it also takes longer than I'd like to set up the game before we can start to play! The iPad version should help with that problem.

Oh, and the board game is 10x the price of the iPad version :)

    • jeffyg3

Yeah, I just searched and looked at the price for the board game...it's actually well priced for what you get in the box and sometimes it's just better just to hold the actual game pieces in your hands. But now that I think of it, spending $5 on the iPad is an excellent idea to get a feel for this game before spending the $50 on the actual board game. I was only planning to get Battle of Wesnoth as my only iPad game when I get the iPad, but I think I'll get Small World too :)

      • http://appVersity.com Dorfdad

Lucky for you as Wesnoth isn't a launch title!

One of the app preview images makes the iPad look a lot bigger than it is. The iPad is not the size of your average board game. It's smaller.

I'm sure it's a good game, but I'm a bit disappointed it's not a game based on the It's A Small World ride at Disneyland.

    • Boldly

I'm sure the game would have been just as horrifying as that ride.

My friends played this at PAX East last weekend. Looked great, and at $5 for an iPad version it's an instant buy for me.

Funny! I just bought the actual board game 2 weeks ago. We've played a couple times and are going to be playing tonight in fact. I'm so excited! It's bought and downloaded, just waiting for my iPad tomorrow.

I hope they bring Memoir '44 to the iPad as well! I realize there are some purists out there who would scoff at this game being digitized but it's perfect for certain situations when a actual board game and chits isn't practical; in a car, on a plane, etc.

For most people, when they see/think board game, they think Clue, Monopoly and the like. There are A LOT of boardgames that are miles above these traditional games as far as depth, scope, etc. Check out http://www.boardgamegeek.com for a sampling!

Some games I'd like to see are Blackbeard, Memoir '44, Dungeoneer (perfect for this device), Decent, .. the list goes on! I'm so excited for what the iPad will bring!

This is one of my first downloads as well. I'm betting a LOT of people are thinking "wouldn't it be great if they did this [insert board game here[ on ipad?" That's the beauty of the pad -- it can really take on lots of game genre's and emulate a board game... like a real board game..with no awkward control pad, and no carpal tunnel syndrome.

    This kid is adorable!

"This game has flying skeletons. There's never flying skeletons... but there are here." LOL
    Good review. Seems Risk-esque.

Sometimes I am really asking myself who is ready to such a high price for an average product. I guess the style of the Ipad is worth a lot of money.

Anyone know how the developers go about developing such a game? Do they actually have a license from the game publisher to develop an iPhone game totally based on a board game from another company?
