$0.99 Madness: Enigmo 2, Beneath a Steel Sky, Ground Effect, Loopy Laboratory and a Freebie

580268Black Friday discounts appear to be coming early as a number of excellent games have just been price reduced to only $0.99.

At that price, we highly recommend picking up every one of these titles.

  • Enigmo 2 ($2.99 -> $0.99) – Pangea's sequel to their incredibly popular Enigmo puzzler. $0.99 is a steal for this 3D puzzler which we reviewed when it came out in September.
  • Beneath a Steel Sky ($4.99 -> $0.99) – A classic reborn, this point and click adventure holds up well over the years and the iPhone-specific changes make it a wonderful adaptation. We reviewed it and found it to be a really great adventure game for both fans and newcomers.
  • Loopy Laboratory ($4.99 -> $0.99) – Now this is a blast from the past. We reviewed this game back in October and really enjoyed it. It's a Chip's Challenge-type puzzle game in which you must escape each level by manipulating objects. The game was fun to play and had excellent controls. My main criticism at the time was it stayed too easy for too long, but for $0.99, it's really a winner.
  • Ground Effect ($3.99 -> $0.99) – A very recent release that we really enjoyed. While a little rough around the edges, the sense of speed and stylings kept us coming back. An easy pick up at $0.99
  • Aves ($2.99 -> Free) – And here's a freebie. We described this as more of a tech demo but an impressive one. It uses binaural audio and an impressive animation technology called BioReplicants.

  • OK, so the promised update to Loopy Laboratory never came — http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=7880 — but it still was one of my most favourite iPhone games ever, and at 99c you'd be crazy not to buy it.

yup, i never REALLY played the game cause of sluggish controls and somewhat slow-paced rythm… chip's challenge is still better than loopy, and i was really eager to play this one but they never updated it…

      .99c? abandonware should be free…

      • If I could just get my game finished, I bet you guys would like it. I remember being frustrated that Loopy Laboratory beat me out of the gate (about a year ago! lol).

That said, from a developer's standpoint I see no reason to make it free if he/she is not offering anything else to cross promote.

From a gamer's perspective I guess every game would be better if it was free. :)

Enigmo2 & Ground Effect are now mine :D

QuizQuizQuiz price will also be dropping when the servers update.

The price will be dropping to $0.99 with the update submitting very soon and something special for the holiday season!

Although I don't think it's fair in general to complain when a game goes on sale for half price within several weeks of buying it, it does irk me when a $5 game like Beneath a Steel Sky drops so quickly to buck. Now I'm going to think three times before buying the next premium title.

    • Lukeb says:

On second thought, they're being very generous to the poorer people, and are giving then a compelling alternative to hyper-violence. You have to hand it them for that.

      • Cranker says:

        Hey !

You beat my score on Polyball :)

        Random comment ……………lol

      • Ahiru says:

but still, you have to consider that most classic adventure games are now freeware (flight of amazon queen for instance) and i think the $5 price tag is high for these kinds of titles – unless of course, it's a really premium release – like monkey island..

You think developers want to drop their prices? It's usually a desperate move when the game just isn't selling in any significant numbers at all. After Apple's cut and bandwidth costs they really make almost no money on 99 cent games (unless they were simple to create and sell hundreds of thousands of them) so it's basically a last ditch effort to recoup some of the production costs.

I can get why you'd be a little irked but look at it from their point of view, they really don't have that much choice if the game never took off like they hoped.

  • munkee says:

    Lukeb, $5 is hardly premium.

I guess you were not around when the AppStore just begun and Pangea dropped the price from $10 to $1 in a couple of weeks' time? And that happened to most of their games, lol.

    • Lukeb says:

good point. Anyway, I did get Enigmo for 2 bucks (my first game for this platform), as well as other games on sale over the last year, so it all evens out in the long run. $5 isn't all that much for a lengthy adventure game, but it is somewhat expensive for a puzzle game such as Kenken, which also went on sale for 99 cents within a couple weeks of me buying it. I guess it all comes down to how good a value a product is in the first place. By the standards of the Sierra games I grew up playing, $5 wouldn't have gotten you the first floppy.

  • blackHorse says:

Aves – 77MBs and you have a flying bird and a bow? What an achievement… Anyway, I'll get the rest when they go free. Now they almost are, so the next step will be 0.0$ yay!

  • TonyRockyHorror says:

Glad I waited on Beneath a Steel Sky!

  • wegmans says:

Aves is the price it should have been. I only paid the $2.99 to support the developer.

  • Ender says:

Steel Sky is on sale for TODAY only (Nov. 20). Grab it quickly.

  • MrMuesli says:

Loving Beneath a Steel Sky. Much prefer the interface to Monkey Island. And the comic book intro was very nice, as is the art style in general.
I lost patience with Enigmo. Too fiddly. I'll give Enigmo 2 a miss.
Loopy Lab was a fantastic game. Highly recommended.
Downloaded Aves and am having one of those Zen Bound moments i.e 'ooh that's pretty….why am playing it??'.
All that's left to ponder on is Ground Effect. Looks good…

  • cubestar says:

Don't know if anyone already stated this, but ALL Pangea stuff is 99¢

  • SteffenMoss says:

Beneath A Steal Sky is now mine, MINE i say! MIIINE!

  • BdragonST says:

yeah, i was kinda expecting Beneath A Steal Sky drop to 99 cents.. and im glad i waited for the price drop!! now i can spend extra 2 bucks for something else..

  • kludger says:

Beneath A Steel Sky was well worth it at full price when I bought it, it's a steal at this sale price. Hope this gets lots of new people to enjoy this real classic.
