'Eliminate' Energy Recharge Time Decreased, 1.1 Update in the Works with New Map

posted by Eli Hodapp on November 13th, 2009 4:52 PM EST in Free, Games, Shooter, iPhone games, iPod touch games

eliminate_characters_transparent-300x259What started as a promotion to keep people playing Eliminate [App Store] in the wake of the massive worldwide release of Modern Warfare 2 has now been extended "until further notice". If you haven't fired up the game recently, the rate at which energy recharges has been reduced to 60 minutes, down from 240.

Because of this change, players will be energized more often, earn more credits, and in turn be able to spend those credits on the various upgrades that are sold in game much faster. If this somehow is the first time you've heard of Eliminate, if you're at all interested in first person shooters you should download it (for free) as soon as you can. While you're waiting for it to download, check out our review which explains quite a bit about the game, available upgrades, and play strategies.

If you've been as captivated by Eliminate as we have, you also will be happy to know that ngmoco already has Eliminate 1.1 in the works. Along with many refinements, there will also be a brand new map and even more armor for you to buy with your hard earned credits. Ngmoco isn't ready to release details yet as the update is still in development, but we should have more information as soon as it is actually submitted to Apple.

It's not playable on the 3G. Way too much lag because of the intense graphics. I'd like a fix for this..

    • Brian says:

The fix is to stop playing on old outdated hardware and buy a real phone.

      • Cask says:

Well, as long as Apple sells outdated hardware then it should be supported at least. Developers should make sure to optimize their games with the older hardware. And as far as I know, the 3G is a real phone. For most people it is perfectly fine and don't see a point in upgrading to the 3GS. Everything runs smooth on my 3GS but it should run as smooth on a 3G, even at the expense of some special effects.

      • iPhoneGamer says:

The developers have no responsibility to support old technology, especially when the game is FREE. If you don't like the performance of your old iPhone, it's time to upgrade, not time to complain that people cater to you.

      • Chase says:

I'll make sure to magically get rid of my AT&T contract, or spend way too much money that any sensible person should ever spend on a phone.

      • Havoc says:

Nice troll, Brian. It's utterly retarded on your part to suggest someone spend $200+ on a new phone to play a fps game that would've been considered a sub-par piece of crap ten years ago on any other platform.

Eliminate is an okay game… for free, and for the iphone. Let's not kid ourselves that it's a good game by any stretch of the imagination though, and it's sure as hell not worth upgrading your device for.

After all that though, I got no problem with games not supporting older models… As long as the customer doesn't have to find out the hard way. Since this game is free, no big deal– delete it and move on. But paying $6.99 to find out something doesn't run on a 3G really blows.

      • Cask says:

Yeah since it is free I don't see a big deal of it not running ok in older iPhones. What I think is bullshit is stuff like Asphalt 5 that a friend bought for his 2G iPhone, only to find out that it was sluggish as hell. They should put a disclaimer or something, instead of people spending cash of something that will not run fine on their device.

      • MrMuesli says:

Well, it seems ngmoco did add a disclaimer on the app store: 'not recommended for 1st generation iPhone or iPod Touch devices'. The first time I have seen a disclaimer which is a step forward at least. Maybe Gameloft will follow suit one day soon. Unfortunately for ngmoco they didn't include the 3G in that disclaimer as well, as it seems 3G owners are having problems too.

I can't tell you the amount of games my 1st gen iPod Touch couldn't cope with. The good news is after a recent up-grade to a 3rd gen Touch I now have a backlog of games to play that work really well now, having been collecting dust since the date of purchase: )

      • chris f says:

brian is right. id rather have game developers that focus on quality than supporting old hardware. i have a 3g right now and it performs fine, and it'll be even better when i upgrade to the new phone next june.

    • Make sure you check out the WTF button for some performance tips. The game may be prettier on the 3GS, but we spent a lot of time optimizing for 3G.

Eliminate runs fine on my iPod Touch 2G (which should be similar in speed to your iPhone 3G). Perhaps it's your wireless network rather than your iPhone.

      • andreas says:

The iPod Touch is faster than the 3G. Just try moving icons around on the home screen. It's quite a difference…

    • hkiphone says:

Works fine on my iPhone 2G 1st Generation too. I attribute my losses due to my crap skills (but was able to get some kills myself anyway)

    • Anonymous says:

I have the iPhone 3G and it works well on 3G. There is little or no lag for me.

  • CapnAHav says:

Im playing on a g1 phone bought on launch day and it plays fine as long as i am on WiFi.

  • jheino says:

    hi
i hope ngmoco make update for better performance
on my ipod touch 3g bad performance ( Jerky)

    • arhb says:

jheino – that has to do with your wireless connection. The game runs brilliantly on the 3rd gen iTouch

      • jheino says:

no, my wireles connection is very good, maybe for you is fine, but for me not good enough
i reboot my device (touch 3g), same problem, i hobe ngmoco make update with better framerate, performance
        /sorry for my english guys.

    • It's not just about the strength of your wireless signal, but also how your router handles data packets, etc. So even if you're paying for a super fast connection, you may not be having an optimal wifi experience with your device.

      • jheino says:

        @ngmoco
when i play offline its the same on ipod touch 3g, eliminate is realy good game
but i hope you make update with better performance
        is that possible? THANKS.

    • Anonymous says:

Try turning off the wi-fi or practicing with bots only to see if the lag is still there.

  • jaze says:

crap! game anyway. i dont know why anyone would play a 1st person shooter on iphone. stupid! the control's are garbage. unless you prepared to play for 15 hours(Brian?) to get used to controls. its a waste of time.

its like trying to drive a Bentley with a mini cooper engine inside. pointless.

get outer empires and forget this rubbish.

    • jheino says:

i mean touchscreen is perfect for shooter games, better than psp , much better

    • Iori says:

Actually, the controls are pretty solid. The Drag to spin has helped me out many times. One thing though, is that you have to fine tune the look sensitivity in "options". Mine is set to 3/4.

  • kita says:

I've already moved on but it's nice to see NGMOCO listening to its fans rather than defending themselves.

  • jackson says:

    only one map ?

  • Greg K says:

Can't they ban 12 year olds from posting?

  • NeoTrunks says:

Here's to hoping they implement a look invert option.

    • WiseWeasel says:

There is inverted look. It's a setting in the 'options' screen.

      • MagicMike says:

No, the current option just lets you swap the left controls to the right and the right controls to the left (for left-handed or right-handed players). We're asking to be able to invert the x and/or y axis for looking. If you are used to playing with these inverted, than this game is unplayable without this functionality.

  • Ahiru says:

no issues on a regular iphone 3g – in fact this game is truly awesome, grats ngmoco…

and ya, keep that faster energy recharge time until ever..

  • Brian says:

im running it daily on my 3g, wifi and 3g. i know its working well when i can kill everybody. it even doesnt seem to need a phone restart before playing like other heavy games (gangstar).

  • WiseWeasel says:

I've been playing this game every day, and I'm loving the faster recharge rate. My thanks to ngmoco for this awesome and free title.

I do want to support ngmoco for making this, however I'm not comfortable with the pricing and functionality of energy purchasing. You spend $1 on 20 energy units, which is sufficient for 1.67 suit charges. Once you've charged your suit 1.67 times, your $1 investment is gone, and you're right back to as if you hadn't paid a thing.

Here's my proposal for how they can fix the purchasing system to be more enticing: the number of energy cells you currently have determines the rate of suit recharging. So if you stock up on a bunch of energy, you can either just let it sit in your inventory and boost the auto-recharge rate, or you can sell them for some credits or suit charges instead. If you spend $30 on energy and let it sit in your inventory, your suit should pretty much recharge at the same rate as it gets consumed by playing non-stop. Spend $5, and you recharge once every 30 min. Play free, and charge every two hours or so.

    • Havoc says:

Don't you think it's a little crazy to even consider spending $30 on this game? I mean it's neat that they got a working FPS on the iphone, but beyond the novelty factor is it really worth putting that much money into it?

      • WiseWeasel says:

Personally, probably not. But at least if you're going to spend $30, you might as well get something worthwhile for it, not just a bit of temporary enjoyment as it currently gets you. The fact is that right now they do sell $30 packs of energy cells, so presumably, SOMEONE is buying those things…

  • dumas1000 says:

A "real" phone, ie the 3GS, would cost most people who don't already own it $700, because the price is doubled for people who were forced to sign a contract by Apple when they purchased their 3g iPhone. Anyone believing that any phone is worth $700 doesn't have their priorities straight.

I am frustrated by the weapon imbalance, more than anything. This game is competitively imbalanced because of the upgrade system. Nothing can change that fact. I've quit matches where I've been overmatched by my opponent's upgrades. And opponents have quit out of my matches because They were overpowered by my upgrades.

Only hardcore players will stick around when they are getting pummelled by
an imbalanced playing field. Hardcore player will endevor to overcome this imbalance. Casual players will get frustrated and quit. And there are far more casual iPhone owners than hardcore.

    • Dark NRG says:

Agreed. I knew this wasn't gonna work. I was bored right away. I even just updated my broken g1 itouch to an iPhone 3G. btw, as a dev you simply CANT ignore 25million units, doh!

    • Erik says:

Sweet, then I classify as a hardcore player, Ha ha! It is annoying, though, when you play against someone 10 levels higher then yourself, who has an upgraded rocket launcher and the bloody tanker armor… >_<

Matches could be determined by the amount of credits a player has put into the armor and weapons that they are using. That might even out the imbalances.

  • Brian says:

No, he\'s talking about invert y-axis. Not talking about switching the left and right \"sticks\"

  • jheino says:

only Tank map good performance, but not other maps

  • dumas1000 says:

I can also confirm that Eliminate has a significant device/connection imbalance. Playing on a 3g iPhone on a 3g network connection, I was only able to reach 10 kills once or twice in 30 or 40 games. On a 3G iPod touch and a wi-fi connection, I reached 10 kills in 3 straight matches, defeating guys easily with higher skill ratings then me. We were both level 13, and I crushed him 10 kills to 2. My connection/device were likely far superior to the opponents I creamed.

  • jon says:

I'm kind of getting tired of the stupid rocket launchers and the fact that people don't seem to take much (or any?) damage using them a point blank range.

  • Tzke says:

Played this on a 3G. Played fine. Actually went 6-1 my very first game. Then uninstalled…

Personally my biggest issue was the controls. I found myself jumping and zooming off and on like crazy. I never checked to see if turning either of those features off was an option, shame on me. If it's not an option, please consider it. I know the attempt to make an authentic FPS is the goal here. I'm casual, I'm not gonna hardcore. Options on the controls please.

The recharge crap, whatever, when it's all said and done, I think we under stand the grand scheme of things.

With all that said, now that you have this FPS under your belt, how about some sort of single player campaign to rival let's say… Nova?

Thanks for the free game, from an ungrateful bastard.

  • Kugi_igi says:

i hope they support quake 3 maps ;)
and more balanced weapons,AR is too underpowered than the other weapons
they should make PC like a shotgun where range is short while targeting is harder on long range :D

  • 8bitgeorge says:

Yeah, the #1 problem is weapon inbalance. Fix it up, ngmoco

  • loza007 says:

I don't really understand the problems some of you folk are having. I have a First Gen iPod Touch with no problems with gameplay at all. Okay it takes a few moments to load and not particularly quick through the menu screens, but the game itself is fine. Have any of you tried re-booting? Anyway, yes it's free with options to pay…but playing for free doesn't hinder your progression through the game. The main problem I have is playing FPS on a touch screen…it works…but so much better with a mouse and keyboard ! ;-)

  • Kai says:

1st gen lags, I use one
Have you tried playing 1 match on the 3gs? then you would know what im talking about

  • ALtts says:

it's really sweet that ngmoco has their support staff posted even here. kudos guys.

  • jheino says:

eliminate best iphone game, but not perfect
    thanks ngmoco for support

  • 2mk01ber says:

  • Justin says:
