Just got it, played it, and beat it. The graphics are terrible and incredibly muddy and dreary, making it hard at times to see where you're going. The Genesis version was smoother, brighter, and better designed, to say nothing of the SNES game. There's virtually no character to any of the enemies or to Arthur/Lancelot. The polygons are roughly on par with a PS1 launch game, which is weak compared to what we've seen the iPhone do. Your character has too many frames of animation for falling or climbing on/off of ladders, and it feels like he's moving uphill through frozen molasses. Controls aren't as responsive as other platformers (notably Castle of Magic), and Capcom needs to consider either buying another company's control scheme or reworking the whole thing from the ground up. The game itself is a complete cakewalk without cheats, and took just over an hour to beat on the first playthrough for me. Music is good, but isn't as memorable as the 16-bit iterations. The 'ending' is a pathetic cliffhanger, setting up another episode or DLC.

If Capcom wants to make the sequel or DLC levels so that they actually sell, they need to:
1) Sharpen up the graphics. 2D, 3D, it doesn't matter, but this mess is inexcusable. The game needs backgrounds, characters need more detail, and the entire screen needs brighter, richer colors, a la Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Maximo.
2) Edit the frames of animation for the characters, and speed up the gameplay.
3) Fix the controls; lean more for Castle of Magic, and less for Sonic the Hedgehog.
4) Pull the camera back a hair and put a few more enemies on the screen. Put some real thought into the enemies and their patterns. The game actually needs to be harder, which is a first for this series.

I have to say, I bought this, and I actually like the game, but HATE the controls. I'd like a virtual joystick rather then the control pad.

I'd have to agree with the later comments. The horrible animation gets in the way of enjoying the game... the 3G SHOULD have the ability to run this smoothly (look at Assassin's Creed). Once again, Capcom has used it's famous franchises to produce lazy iPhone games (would anyone disagree that the company has yet to make a game truly worth of the Capcom name?).

Played it for maybe 20-30 mins so far and I'm a fan. I have a 3G and not sluggish at all. No bad frame rates or speed issues. Everything seems speedy and essentially how I remember it. I've always liked that theme. maybe it sticks in one's head after having to play the original one so much because of all the deaths :)

No complaints or issues with the graphics. I would even say they are close to the original (especially when one considers this is a Gold Knights version so there are bound to be differences). For instance, I don't remember being turned into a chicken :)

Shooting and jumping buttons work fine and are well spaced. Very easy to do the double jump. Did have a couple hiccups when trying to jump a specific direction (switching between right and left quickly - button mashing doesn't exactly work well here :)
But after a couple of deaths, got it figured out with like 5-10 mins of playing.

For the guy having problems on his 3GS, something must be funky with your setup as its smooth as butter (is that an expression?) on my 3G. Try restarting the phone and trying again.

If you were a fan of the game ever, I would totally recommend this. And if you've never played it, it's a fun little side scroller. It's just $3 - can't go wrong!

I also like the cheats being DLC. Allow the game to be a little cheaper and then for those wanting more bells and whistles, pay a little more.

BOOORING!!

hah jk but seriously; do you ever wonder if we want the old graphics because we relied on our imagination at the time? Will it ever be the same? Could you say "the better the graphics, the less you use your imagination?"

I too like this game. The controls works, the graphics are really nice and it's not as hard as the original - which I don't mind ^^ Totally enjoying it so far.

The PSP version does look amazing, but we're talking a full portable console game vs a 2.99 game on the App Store. I can understand how a big GnG fan would be disappointed, but saying that is has worse frame rates than Castle of Magic is simply not true. At least on my 3Gs the actually is smooth throughout, though the character animation is pretty rough. All in all I'm actually really enjoying it, but, at 6 stages it seems way too short.

Seeing this has inspired me to download the PSP version for my PSPGo. Games like this need proper buttons, and from the looks of the video, a polished finished product too.
