233257So, is it possible to fit another worthy line-drawing game into an already crowded market? Backflip Studios thinks so with their new game Harbor Havoc 3D [$1.99].

Like Flight Control, the objective of the game is to route your ships to their proper docks. Simply draw a line from the ship to the dock and you're on your way. Harbor Havoc 3D's claim to fame, however, is the incorporation of multiple layers of vessels that you must properly navigate. Depending on the map, this can include submarines, boats and helicopters or even submarines and ground rovers in the underwater map. Each type of ship can only collide with like ships, so keeping this in mind is critical for success.

The game comes with 4 maps: Far East, Atlantis, Arctic, and Lighthouse. Each offers a variant in gameplay. Far East is your straightforward Flight Control setup where you are docking different ships to their ports. Ships, however, don't have to be undocked as in Harbor Master. The game also adds an anchoring mechanism by tapping on a ship that will keep them in place. The Far East map is going to feel boring to anyone who has put in much time in any of the existing line-drawing games, but Atlantis and especially Arctic are where things get interesting.

The developer's gameplay video shows how crazy things can get and even shows the locked Lighthouse level which gives you a partially obscured view of the play area.

For advanced players who have gotten bored of Flight Control and are looking for more of a challenge, Harbor Havoc 3D manages to provide added layers of challenge without necessarily being different just for the sake of being different.

Nice game, but what is the title of this song??

    • http://www.nothowitlooks.com Brett Archibald

The song is a strings version of Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust".

It's not included in the game though, it was only used in this promotional video.

Thx going to search for it, sounds nice!

It's probably the Turtle Island String Quartet or the Vitamin String Quartet playing that, by the way. Both groups do a lot of awesome rock covers like that.

Looks pretty good. I think there's always room for new ideas. 33rd Division is a great take on the "line drawing" theme (which apparently is a genre now). I've been enjoying that one lately.

The one thing I like about Harbor Master vs. this app and Flight Control is that the docked vehicles just disappear into thin air with the latter two apps. I find disembarking the vehicles just as important as docking them.

Yeeha, another game, which does not pause, when you sleep your iPhone and which does not save the current state, when you switch to another app, so that you have to restart from the beginning every time.

This is something which really bothers me. These are must haves IMO. I know they`ll eventually add these features in one of the updates but and should have been included in the very first version only IMHO.

Good point. I hate apps that prohibit you from quitting or taking a break when you need to.

I mean it's a phone game, it's usually going to be played when someone is waiting for something or someone, more often than when someone has a bunch of free time to sit down and play the game until it's over or whatever.

I wish every game had to have a pause feature of some sort.

Same game in 3D for the 100th time? No thanks.

I wasn't going to comment, but with two of the above it's too much to resist. AstroSerf is another new line drawing game that:

    A. Pauses and saves your progress if the device goes to sleep, you get a call, etc., and

    B. The ships don't disappear into thin air, you have to get them in AND out a la Harbor Master.

There are a few other twists too, but check out the site if you're interested. I'm the developer, by the way, so I guess this is a plug. :)

You got to do what you got to do, Dawvee, to get the word out.

Astroserf looks awesome, any chance of a demo coming?

I like the graphics..subs, boat and heli's..?..all at the same time..?..gonna get frantic.
Nice idea about anchoring boats in place if it gets too hectic.
