c64_previewThe much publicized Commodore C64 emulator from Manomio is finally coming back to the App Store. The app has had a rocky history with an initial rejection, public out cry, App Store approval and was then pulled from the App Store by Apple due to inadvertent violations of the SDK terms.

Well, C64 is "almost back" with details posted in FAQ forum by Manomio. According to the developers, the 1.1 version will include the following:

  • Compliance with the Apple SDK agreement
  • Up to 30% improvement in performance - better battery life and smoother game play
  • 3 additional games, International Soccer, International Basketball and International Tennis
  • Minor UI improvements

Manomio also reveals that they will be supporting in-app purchases in the 1.2 version which is expected in December. This will allow you to buy additional games in-app rather than the rather cumbersome installation process they had previously used. Existing customers of C64 will get the 1.1 update for free as if nothing had happened.

Looking towards the future, Manomio is considering support for external controls, network play, social gaming and more. Read our hands on with C64 for more details on the App.

Great to hear! Hope they can get it back on quickly and smoothly. I knew I should have picked this up on release... had a feeling something might happen but didn't pull the trigger. Definitely picking this up the day it's back!

I got the first version but quite frankly is enjoyable for maybe 6 or 7 minutes. After you get headache. Anyway, since I am a devoted c64 fan, I will have to do this upgrade. But Manomio, dont you think is time to release some REAL titles? when I read 'international' I almost had an heart attack. I thought it was International karate...its not...bummer...

Presumably, 1.1 will also remove BASIC?

    • DotComCTO

Man! That was a long time in Apple's "penalty box" for breaking the rules. You can bet that there will be no BASIC if they're in compliance with Apple's rules.

Yes, I'd pay 10 bucks for Turrican and Giana Sisters in-app.

One could ask the poke53280 folks to port over Hurrican ;) It's a GREAT game for the PC. See poke53280.de/artikel/artikel.php?id=37

    ...considering support for external controls..."

am I missing something here? As in physical external controls? I had thought that there was currently nothing in the pipeline for external controls, am I wrong (please say I am!).

External blue tooth and 30pin dock controller :)

      • http://www.iphonelife.com/ Menneisyys

Will you implement support for that? Great... I'll send a mail to the manufacturers promtly to ask them when they plan to start mass-production.

    • TKO

The FAQ at Manomio's site (linked in the article above) contains a link to one of the external controller's they're considering support for, called the GameBone Pro. {shrugs} I'm not so worried about such things. I mostly have the c64 emulator on my phone for the novelty value .. and the occasional bit of International Soccer/Basketball when they (finally) become available. Those two games are surprisingly good ..despite looking like blocky messes, and being genuine Commodore games. (Commodore never did good first-party games.) :)

Maybe I should have jailbroken my phone .. though I was in early enough to download the emulator, it's been quite useless without anything to run on it. I hear the jailbroken peoples have worked out how to inject more games into it. ;)

      • http://www.iphonelife.com/ Menneisyys

Yup, a lot of games are running on it pretty nicely. Not so compatible (because of the lack of control fine tuning) as the Windows Mobile version done by the same folks, but is still great. See my report at http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?p=481920 (it also links to a YouTube video showing some of the better C64 titles like Last Ninja, uridium, paradroid etc. running on the emulator)

Hope 1.1 remains hackable, particularly now that the emulation has been made better.

This is great news! I'll be nabbing this on day 1.1 :)

Also, I would love to see more system-emulation on the iPhone. Coleco Vision, anyone?

What would you like to see?

    • http://www.iphonelife.com/ Menneisyys

To my knowledge, there aren't any Coleco emulators for the iPhone (not even for Windows Mobile). There are, however, quite a few ones for other consoles, mostly ported over by Zodttd - but they all require a jailbroken phone. There was also a certain ZX Spectrum emulator in the AppStore. It was simply a disaster and just a rip of an open source project; fortunately, Apple, in the meantime, has removed it. (So did the developer; it can no longer be found on their homepage.)

Now with DLC/in-app purchasing, the idea of buying C64 games will really take off! BTW, I second Jumpman by Epyx (aka System 3).

What I'd love the most is network multiplayer. It's been implemented VERY nicely by the same folks (!!!) in the Windows Mobile version of the same (!!) emulator. I've made some demo videos of International Karate, Archon II (Adept) and Wizard of Wor running in networked (wireless remote) mode:

    youtube.com/watch?v=nbiQ5NpKW7c
    youtube.com/watch?v=hoOvqwp44sA
    youtube.com/watch?v=GRuGD20tHcE

respectively. (Sorry for forcing you to copy / paste the links; direct YouTube links would have resulted in getting into the usual moderation queue.)

NOTE: these are tech demo videos (showing that multiplayer does work and also showing how you can configure the emultors to run in multiplayer mode), NOT videos of how really these games should be played - after all, there was only one person to operate the emulators, also more or less blocked by the camera situated very close to the two devices. That is, do NOT complain about you not seeing a wonderful two-player game, "just" a tech demo.

Oh man, I LOVED my older sisters' C64 growing up so this is exciting news.

I hope it has ... that game where you're a kid in haunted places and the 3rd level is like a cinema (yeah, I can't remember the name of the game, but I loved it nonetheless).

As an old c-64 addict from 1980, I sure hope they bring back some of the old classics like Raid On Bungeling Bay, Jumpman, Lode Runner, Pogo Joe, etc.
    That would be awesome.
The commodore was the de-facto standard way back when. I remember software stores had aisles upon aisles of all kinds of games.

This is a lovely piece of work, very polished, but unfortunately crippled due to a total lack of content. Until there are some proper C64 classics, this will remain a curio.

Wizball, Head over Heels (for some puzzles), Way of the exploding fist along with the essentials like IK+ would be great.
