'Derek Jeter Real Baseball' Slides into the App Store

938382_4Gameloft's Derek Jeter Real Baseball [App Store] joined the rest of their impressive sports lineup on the platform this evening. Featuring full 3D graphics, several different game modes ranging from home run derbies to full season modes, and full in-game commentary, Derek Jeter Real Baseball seems to display the same high quality production as other Gameloft games.

We'll post a more detailed look at this game soon as I'm anxious to get deeper into the game to see how it compares to Gamevil's Baseball Superstars 2010 [App Store], another full-featured baseball game we recently gave 4.5 stars to.

Update: A hands-on gameplay video has been embedded above. The game offers two control methods for batting. There is no targeting of the ball for each method. The first is touch in which you simply tap on the screen to swing the bat as the ball approaches. The second method is slide in which you slide down to pull your bat back, and quickly swing upward in time with the pitch. Neither mode requires you to aim at the ball.

Pitching involves a combination of picking your pitch, timing a tap to determine power and accuracy, and use of the accelerometer to direct where the pitch will go. The video shows all these modes.

Isn't Baseball Superstars 2010 a RPG game? Not sure if the genre's match…

    "slides on to"

    would that be in to?

    you guys always do that.

games are in (within) the appstore not "on the app store"

Gameloft is releasing some great games. I'm starting to play my DSi and PSP less and less. The games on the appstore are becoming more then cell phone games. And the prices are low!! I've payed $30 for some ds/psp games that had less content then a $5 app!!

Anyway I'm sure I'll pick this up. Now back to Uncharted 2…

What an awful game. The pacing is ultra slow (takes way too long to throw a pitch), the hitting involves purely timing, without taking into account where in the zone the pitch is or where you want to hit it, fielding is nonexistent, graphics are herky-jerky to the extreme, it's impossible to hit doubles even when you hit a ball to the wall, and the game is in general unsatisfying and boring. I bought this game solely on the fact that I wanted a real baseball game for iPhone and Gameloft had a good reputation for quality. BIG MISTAKE. Do yourself a favor and boycott this one, it's a failure.

Do you own any of the other "full" baseball games to offer a comparative perspective? Homerun Battle obviously has a better batting mechanic, but is limited to just that. Freeverse's Flick Baseball is supposed to have fielding, so we'll see what that game has to offer if it ever gets released…

    • SalsaMD says:

Actually, while one doesn't field the ball per se, one does control where the ball is thrown once fielded.

  • Galley says:

The umpire congratulating a player on a home run? Yeah, right!

  • Lance says:

lol @ the umpire – he's also in the dugout. omg this looks legendary bad.

  • grindr says:

That's not the ump. Looks like the coaches wear all dark clothing whereas the ump has gray pants.

  • Josh says:

What awful player animation! Can they possibly make them any less lifelike?

  • KidFresh says:

A sure sign the game is crap: Right-fielders routinely gunning out runners at first base. I'll stick with NES Baseball.
