Gameloft has provided screenshots of its upcoming iPhone sports title Derek Jeter Real Baseball, along with an indication that the game will be available in the App Store very shortly.

DerekJeterRealBaseball_Screen1

Details of the forthcoming title, as listed by the studio.

  • Best graphics of any baseball simulation on the App Store with all 3D players and stadiums
  • Lifelike animations when batting, pitching or catching and also features an innovative gauge to use for batting so swings can be even more accurate and powerful
  • iTunes Music Library access
  • Delivers intense realism thanks to audio commentary, sound effects and spectator reactions to your plays

Celebrating the release of the game, Gameloft is running a video contest where the top 10 winners can take home (depending upon ranking) an iPod touch, an official MLB jersey, or an official MLB cap.  All 10 winners will be featured in Derek Jeter Real Baseball as players in a special team.

The rules of the contest are explained in this video, and are as follows:

  1. Print the official target of the contest
  2. Record a video showing a spectacular and accurate pitch at the target
  3. Upload the video on the contest website
  4. Users can then vote for their favorite videos.

The contest, which is limited to the US and Canada, began Friday, October 2nd and runs until November 15th.

See a bit of the upcoming game in action in the following gameplay video.

it's hard to tell how batting works, but I hope they integrated motion controls that are way better than what the MLB World Series game had.

The batting looks a bit weird... It seems like the swing makes contact when the ball is only about a third of the way to the plate.

Gameloft sports games always seem to have a generically worse quality than compared to all of their other selection of amazing action, protagonist driven games

The game looks terrible....it is 100 steps back in today's realeases.
Unfortunately, it is unacceptable. So weird, frame rate issues, looking foward to save my money on this one....

Conspicuous by it's absence, acknowledgment of real teams/players. I don't think Gameloft has an MLB marketing license, although they have one for the NFL and for soccer players. You cannot ask 6.99 for a baseball game featuring generic teams and generic players.

    • spiffyone

You can if it has that level of production value, and stars the Cap'n.

      :)

And the first person who even alludes to the idea that Jeter is in any way "generic" can look at his stats this year, and ever year of his career, and drown in their tears of jealousy.

      Go Yanks!

      • str1f3

That's very nice and all and while I've been a Jeter fan since single A, this game looks like crap. You can't even see when the ball connects with the bat. They are having serious frame rate issues and not being able to have all the players and teams is a problem. This is not even including that they will release it close to the season's end.

      • dumas1000

no, you can't. it's all relative to personal opinion, obviously, but i would never pay $7.00 for an unlicensed sports game. A few dollars, perhaps. $7.00, never. I'm certain I'm not the only one. Hardcore gamers will want real teams and players. Casual gamers will not care, but casual gamers will find it difficult to pay $7.00 for a baseball game, regardless of it's content. Either drop the price to appeal to casual gamers, or keep the price high, but make sure your game is licensed in order to appeal to hardcore gamers. To take an in-between approach is bad business. This game will not sell well at $6.99 with generic/imaginary players. It just won't.

      • Scott30

Well if they game looked and played great I wouldn't care about not having real players and teams but it doesn't look all that great graphics/framerate etc. and it doesn't seem like it'll play all that great going by the video obviously we'll see when it comes out but so far no.

I'm a big Yanks fan myself but only one player even Jeter is meaningless really and a waste at that, altho I imagine it'll draw alot of sales with his name I'm sure theres alot of less informed people that will be upset thinking all the players will be in the game as well. Find it odd they got the NFL license but couldn't get a MLB and also releasing a baseball game at the end of the MLB season seems weird too.

Its really disappointing that we dont have a really good realistic baseball sim on the platform its easily doable, I wish a baseball sim would simply use the Homerun Slugger ( whatever its called now lol ) controls for hitting as its perfect for the platform. And then just focus in on decent graphics, good AI and having the MLB license would make it perfect but doesn't look like its happening anytime soon.

I don't know. If the gameplay mechanics are there and it's fun, it certainly would be better than what's out there currently.

you have to swing really early, and the ball looks too big when pitching. But the 3d engine looks great, i hope they tweak the game some more before releasing.

From the video this game looks odd. Animation looks jarring like there aren't enough frames in the animation cycles, and music sounds rubbish, praise the Lord for Music Library playback.

imo lifelike would mean the ball would come from your hand, wonder why no1 can make a decent 3d baseball game for iphone? There were tons of great n64 era baseball games ie: Tripleplay baseball, Allstar baseball, high heat mlb etc.

I'm not crazy about the pitching "gauge". Why not use some kind of touch or swipe controls. Kind of a let down. And I agree, it looks like the ball is still on the way to the plate when it is struck by the bat.

And someone here didn't like the music? It's just a trailer, I'm sure it isn't the in-game music! Duh.

I had a lot of fun with the Jeter baseball on my old flip phone, but i expect a few enhancement for this version, other than graphics. I 'm not sure I see them though. Looks cool...we'll see.

Yeah, I am not impressed with this title at all.

If you ask me, Home Run Battle 3D and Baseball Superstars 2010 are the only two baseball games people need.

What I would like to see soon, is an NHL title!

    • Colorsound

"If you ask me, Home Run Battle 3D and Baseball Superstars 2010 are the only two baseball games people need."

More like the only games 'You' need.

I have been waiting for a great full fledged baseball game, and Superstars 2010 isn't it.
Maybe EA needs to bring back MVP just for the iPod

      • http://www.twitter.com/josh_hofer Josh

haha, really guy? Didn't I already state "If you ask me, ..." Clearly that was already my personal opinion on baseball games, so chill buddy!

I'll take an NHL game before ANOTHER baseball game ;)

      • 2kitties1cup

wow, you had to point out that an opinion is just an opinion. You're so brilliant that you think everyone else is too dumb to understand this instinctively by definition?

Opinion [uh-pin-yuhn] - a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.

        Duh.

BTW the OP is right. Baseball Stars 2010 and Home Run Battle 3D is all you need. They are excellent.

Anyone else sick of all the sports games? Feels like every third review these days. Bleh. :P

    • SalsaMD

      No.

If fact, there really are not that many in the app store, so IMHO, when of quality, they merit the attention given.

      • Scott30

Agreed Salsa, What do you expect? Any EA and Gameloft game is big news and they have both been spitting out alot of games lately and quite a few are sports games.

I can't say much about it, but my friend actually tested this game in a Gameloft study group...he said it was surprisingly bad.

I live Gameloft, but I think we all know sport games are not their strongest area.

    • SalsaMD

True, but "Let's Golf" and "NFL 2010" were not "bad" sport games. "Real Tennis" had some issues at the outset that have largely been addressed, although the game is too easy now...

I REALLY hope they clean up this one before submitting to Apple. It'd be a damn shame if those frame rate issues made it into the final build.

Also agree that the Homerun Battle 3D controls should've been adopted for hitting. I mean, if Gameloft's willing to rip off console games, then why not a freakin' iPhone game? Hehe.
