Duke 3D screenThe App Store seems to go in cycles with releases and upgrades coming in waves. Tonight a number of long awaited game updates have appeared, including Duke Nukem.

Here's a partial list:

  • Duke Nukem 3D ($2.99) - The long awaited control system update is now available. This fixes the issue with the analog controls. The controls are fully adjustable and many find them to be too sensitive on the default settings, so be sure to adjust these until you find a liking. The controls are still perhaps not ideal, but are much improved.
  • Samurai: Way of the Warrior ($2.99) - Stability and performance improvements and.... "minor game balancing" including that of level 3.
  • Archon ($2.99) - New 1 player campaign mode called "Conquest" which is said to add hours of individual play.
  • Wild West Pinball ($0.99 - New missions, music, tilt, and fixed camera option.
  • The Deep Pinball ($0.99) - OS 2.x compatibility, and fixed camera option

I do not see the Archon Conquest. Is it an entirely separate app?

  • WeirdingWay

Does the Nukem update come with some bubble gum?

    • THRASH

Please fill me in... I am about to buy and would like some insight.

      • NotYou

        He's all out of gum.

"It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum... And I'm all outta gum."

seriously though, what they need to do is, to have accelerometer-controlled, vertically inverted 'mouse view'(tilt towards you, and Duke looks up).
Combine that with a proper virtual analog for movement, and you'll get a more natural control method, ideal for strafing.
I'm surprised no FPS on the iPhone has this yet.

    • TKO

What we need is for someone *else* to do Duke Nukem. The controls started out buggy ..had to wait over a month for the update, now the bugs are gone, sure, but the controls still aren't even *good*! And it's a *port*! What else do they have to do apart from tweaking the controls? (rhetorical queston: I know there's other stuff involved, but the control is a big part of it. Doesn't feel to me like they've given it more than a glance.)

hell yes, samurai: wotw stage 3 was difficult. but i managed that after trying harder. so practice is the key not an update. *g*

Duke Nukem 3D controls were much improved. Much more playable. Sometimes I hit the up or down button instead of fire. But that's only a minor problem. Will probably get used to that.

The controls in Duke Nukem are still completely unusable - I mean, to a degree that can only be described as comedy. :..(

i agree. Stage three wasn't easy but it wasn't like the stage stopped me from playing. I just kept at it and after a few minutes won

The analog-style updated controls for Duke Nukem are still conspicuously unresponsive ... having a hard time with it ... it's an improvement, but an incremental one, especially after a month's work of tweaking.

They need to take a cue from Gameloft, a la Sandstorm ...

    • differenz

exactly. I bought the game and now I'm not even playing it because of the controls. almost impossible to handle!

    • mrkgoo

to be fair, they supposedly only spent a week or so to fix the control bug - not the whole month.

      • Chem

My guess is that they spent a week fixing the controls -in my view they are fixed, they work fine now and I really like the game- the rest of the time is the approval process.

Generally speaking, updates take 3 weeks to get the nod from Apple.

The Archon update features a new board called, "Invictis" which gives you randomized power-ups in the Combat Arena (Triple shot, Faster speed, more Health, etc.) and the Strategy Board portion has special Power Squares that gives your characters special abilities. It does NOT include the 1 player campaign (sorry, it's my fault for the error.) That will be coming soon in a later update.
The controls were also updated and tweaked so the game is VERY responsive. Try it out and you'll see!

    • yes please

Anyway chad, we love archon ... keep on it
