495A lot of news came out yesterday at the Apple media event launching the new iPods. Aside from the new hardware releases there were a number of software releases including iPhone OS 3.1 and iTunes 9. A couple of other interesting things to note.

Apple has discounted the iPhone 3.x upgrade for iPod Touch owners from $9.95 to $4.95. So, those holding out can now get the 3.x upgrade for cheaper. The 3.0 -> 3.1 upgrade is free. Of course, if you are already planning on buying one of the new iPod Touches, you can skip it altogether, since the new ones come with OS 3.1 already installed.

Another important thing to note if buying a new iPod Touch is that only the high end (32GB and 64GB) iPod Touches carry the new processor and 3d graphics hardware of the 3GS.

newipod

That means buying the cheaper 8GB ($199) will get you the same hardware as last year's iPod Touch. While few games area requiring the new hardware, over time we would expect there will be more.

I have been holding off on getting an iPod Touch but I think the new features are nice enough for me to finally jump on board.

Just to be clear, the 3.1 update is free for iPod Touch owners who already purchased 3.0. It's $4.95 if you're still on 2.x.

I think it's super lame that they didn't include the newer gfx chipset in the 8gb version... i mean.. wtf.. we already know that apple's margins are high.

Plus.. here's the kicker.. remember the few hours *before* the event?

    iPod touch:
    - 8 GB now $189, down $40

LOL! The *exact* same hardware model was actually $10 CHEAPER for a few hours.

why is it $4.95 when everything else costs $x.99??????

That will be the most difficult question to answer for the marketing department. Why don't we just round up, no one is stupid enough to think that's not really $5!! ugh

    • http://starscenesoftware.com Eric5h5

Nobody thinks that $4.95 is significantly different from $5.00 if you actually stop to think about it, but psychologically, you see $4.95 as being notably less than $5.00 because you see 4 < 5. This is well established, which is why almost everybody does it.

      • GrimmPeter

        whereas with $5 you see 5 + 0 + 0?

      • Anonymous

I'm not complaining about the $4.95 upgrade to OS 3.1 from OS 2.x because I held out from shelling out $9.95 just one week ago. Bonus! :)

      • wegmans

yeah but it's not consistant with the rest of the app store.. its just funny to see them use the $x.95 instead of $x.99!

Anyone know how much RAM the new 32/64 iPods have? Do they have 256 like the iPhone 3GS or the same amount as the original 2G iPod touch's.

I am very disappointed with apple for not releasing a camera for the new ipod touch, especially since the ipod nano, a much smaller device, got a video camera. Steve Jobs' reasoning for it was that he wanted to bring the price down for the general populous, because of it becoming a force as a gaming device, rather than just an ipod.

How does this make sense? The cheapest ipod was not changed in any way, how is that different from just dropping the price on the previous models and making the new ones- the "upgrade" models, with a camera! So now, next time the new ipod comes, it probably will be the same as the new one, only with a camera. Such B.S.

    • http://illusionlabs.com Anders

They don't want the ipod to be too similiar to the iphone, simple as that.

      • spiffyone

Lack of 3G network would be a major difference, no?

I mean, honestly...there's really no good reason, even on a business level, as to why they didn't include a camera for the true next gen update.

People don't buy an iPhone over an iPod touch because the former has a friggin' camera, they buy it because it's a phone and the touch isn't. Putting a camera in the touch isn't going to change that fact. And, before anyone mentions stuff like Skype, VoiP over WiFi is a non-issue as while it's nice for the small percentage of people that use it, the fact remains that the vast majority of mobile phone users would like to use their phone whenever and wherever they wish rather than need be near a WiFi zone, yet another "selling point" that iPhone has over iPod touch even with VoiP over WiFi considered.

    • Dreezix

I think they're spreading the features to get people to buy a Touch AND a Nano.

Which a lot of people just might do.

    • pixelman

I was also hoping for a camera, and was going to buy one immediately. But now, I'm in no hurry, and will wait to see if the next iteration has a camera. I have a 1st generation touch and while I want the better graphics, I don't need it immediately. I'd rather now spend the money on the Sony Webbie HD camera (I like the rotating lense feature).

I agree so much with you both. Not adding the new hardware to the 8GB iTouch and not adding a camera to any of the iTouch lineups was stupid. I think folks could afford to sacrifice knowing they were going to be on an even keel with the iPhone and 32GB+ users.

APPLE SCREWED UP. I'M HOLDING OUt WITH MY 2G iTOUCH AS I CAN STILL PLAY EVERYTHING.

Why did they need to update hardware? Every year. That's why Apple can't be taken seriously in the handheld market. I don't get much lag with games on my iPod Touch 2G, but I just hope I don't need to upgrade to the 3G, just so I can play games without as much lag.

Steve Jobs want to make the iPod Touch a handheld? Well they better introduce something call QUALITY CONTROL!!! You know all those shit games that are really short, but are always popular in the app store games section? Well, Apple needs to make a section called "Hardcore" that only apple can tag a game as. It's really hard to find new good games in the app store with all the clutter.

    • andy

      THINK DIFFRENT!!!!

    • Decoy Octopus

You say that now, but wait until games start requiring open gl es 2.0 graphics that the ipod touch 2g doesn't support.

      • spiffyone

        And when will that happen?

In about a year or so, not very soon. So Apple could've WAITED for a year or so, and THEN release the new Cortex A8+ SGX based hardware if keeping costs down was a major concern.

I went on record when 3Gs was announced that Apple needn't have released that true next gen update because the OS 3.0 update resolved a TON of the issues people had with the iPhone. And the biggest selling point for the majority of the common consumers of the new iPhone 3Gs isn't even the speed boost but rather the inclusion of the camera.

Apple could've done the same for iPod touch, as it is the "sister" device line.

Regardless, the fact is that the cost of the new 3Gs based devices is NOT that significantly higher than those of the original iPhone (ARM11+MBX-lite) based devices. A camera could've been added, quite frankly, and it wouldn't have been much higher in terms of cost.

Expect an "update" to this update around Jan. or Feb.

Just bought the 64gb ipod touch 3rd gen. At first, I was really disappointed at the lack of camera, but then I thought about it, and I realized the enhanced speed is actually really significant. Why did ppl change from the iphone 3g to the 3gs? Because of the SPEED. And I am really noticing the speed difference. Also, it is now 64 gb, which I was in dire need of.

Alright. I'm not terribly happy about this because A. I'm having trouble getting a decent job in the market today and B. because this MIGHT exclusify games to the 3GS types. I mean, I'm a huge fan of apple, but seriously they're doing the same thing sony did with the PSPgo. Except of course in reverse. Gah. Stupid lack of dual thumbsticks on the pspgo ='(. I was SO excited. Oh well, I hope that apple keeps up expectations and releases an even more powerful 'gaming device' soon, with actual thumbsticks and buttons. If i had a job and could blow 400 on a new ipod... I SOOO would...

I think that we will see the iPod Touch being phased out before too long. Think about it. You can buy an iPhone and get everything you want even if you do not activate the Phone service. Why would they keep the Touch?

If you want the cool features that the iPhone has to offer then just buy one and use it like an iPod. I have 4 or 5 friends who do just that and have added a prepaid sim to it as well.

Its all heading in that direction and in two years you will see the end of the iPod Touch.

    Just my $0.02

But buying an iphone without a contract is like setting your wallet on fire. It is probably well over 600 bucks for an 8gb 3gs without contract...

      • Altrez

It wont always be that way... Watch and see. Apple is making a very calculated move to merge the two. Its got some great add potential think "The two have beicme one..etc etc" and also this way AT&T can win on every front.

Not in agreement with you about just picking up an iPhone over an iPod Touch and NOT using the phone part of it. Like sf49lu wrote, it's $600 without a contract vs. $300 for the iPod Touch equivalent. I will say that there is a market for USED iPhones that are no longer under contract (i.e. 2-3 years old). I'm sure there are plenty of iPhone 3G users just itching to upgrade to the 3GS and sell their 3G at a discount.

Hey Spiffy, since when can you use a Nano as a phone??
So, the Nano video camera makes sense, but a cam in the Touch doesn't? I don't want to just do sexting ;) Maybe I want to photograph some flowers for my wallpaper pal.

    • spiffyone

I don't really understand your comment.

I stated that Apple should have put a camera in the iPod touch. At no point did I state that they shouldn't have.

The argument from those stating that Apple didn't want to in order to differentiate iPhone and iPod touch, and that putting a camera in the touch would've led to a drop in iPhone sales is what I was arguing against. IMHO, people don't pick up an iPhone over an iPod touch because of the camera, but because one is a phone and the other isn't. Putting a camera in the touch isn't going to change that. And VoiP over WiFi doesn't change that fact either.

So why does the update cost money for touch owners again? I think most internet savvy people will just torrent the update because updates should be free. This could potentially hurt developers because some people choose not pay for an update (or update for whatever reason) and leave bad reviews on an app they glanced at because it doesn't work with an older OS.

I have the 2gen touch with the $10 3.0 (bye the way, not worth it!)
I agree, If a cam came on the new one? I would buy it and pawn off this 2gen! but without any "big" update, like a cam. no point at all!
the best thing about the touch "to me" is wifi (news.tv,weather---etc)
and the movie and tv shows! as for the music, my 3rd gen nano works great for that! and easier to tote around! as for touch gaming?? lmao :)
it is horrible! unless its pacman or some game like that! i shelled out enough cash on games i thought would be fun! however, the touch screen and tilting the touch for gaming, is no fun! however, i do enjoy the bowling app! and its free! they should at least add buttons to the edge or something? anyway---peace!

and what do you know....less than 3 says after i buy 3.0 for $10 3.1 comes out for $5

This always seems to happen to me, no matter how long i wait prices never drop...but as soon as i buy something, less than a week later it finally drops.

This is true the 3.0 update cost $10 and it still don't work very well I had alot of problems on safari and youtube and with the wireless conection.
We should get like a reward or a least the difference on an itunes card.

I agree with the populous. Not upgrading hardware is lame. Especially for touch owners that have WiFi and wanted a camera (like me) so we could take spur of the moment shots and upload them. The whole bit with turning it into a gaming platform is also quickly becoming another turn off. The ZuneHD is looking better for me as a replacement as my first gen becomes increasingly tired just to get away from all this stuff.

I will have to say Apple is really good at milking the fans tho, and getting them to pay 3x the amount for the same hardware that PC owners pay! My other alternative is to wait around like the others and see if a camera appears, but I've all ready decided not to get into the iPhone thing...
