'Asphalt 5', 'Shrek Kart', and 'Earthworm Jim' Screenshots Revealed

posted by Eli Hodapp on August 21st, 2009 12:04 AM EDT in Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games

Fresh off the press from German Apple news and rumor site MacNotes.de are some new screenshots and previously unrevealed details on several upcoming Gameloft games. Apparently only a few select members of the media at Gamescom were given early access to these games, so this information is all coming from Google's German to English translation which may have questionable accuracy.

Asphalt 5 is said to offer more of everything seen in the previous game and feature 12 tracks as well as 33 licensed cars including a Mini Cooper S. Asphalt 5 is also will offer additional DLC packs along with online rankings and multiplayer. The translation is unclear whether the "network" multiplayer is online or local only, but Bluetooth will definitely be included.

Shrek Kart is being compared to Mario Kart with automatic acceleration, tilt steering as well as brake and turbo buttons for the controls. 15 tracks are included along with 3 "arenas". Shrek Kart will also have WiFi and Bluetooth multiplayer and is launching in September.

The description of Earthworm Jim makes it sound like the controls are good but share the problem that all virtual D-Pad games have in that the lack of tactile feedback makes the precision jumping required in a platformer fairly difficult.

I remember being blown away by Asphault 4 over a year ago. Hopefully A5 can replecate that. The competition is a lot more feirce this time around though. Real Racing and NFS are really good racing games. Gameloft hasn't let me down yet though.

wow A5 is a big step up from A4. The Appstore has grown a lot since then.

  • Tower Defender says:

Is it me or does the first screenshot of Asphalt 5 look much better than the second screen?

  • Jake aka vbxz47 says:

Maybe the second screen is from earlier in development. It would make sense, but there are still a lot of other reasons.

  • PitchBlak says:

I'm stoked to see Earthworm Jim again. =D He's so wacky.

Shrek Kart looks to be the new Crash Nitro Kart 3D. At least it'll have multiplayer, anyway.

  • RaZrVIN says:

Sadly, I doubt the finished Asphalt 5 will look as good as the first screenshot… The textures and shadows are way too smooth… And they don't have the same "wind lines" used for the sense of speed in the second screen shot, if you know what I'm talking about. If you look at the third picture in the link arn posted, it looks like the second screenshot, so that's what I'm guessing the finished Asphalt 5 will look like. It would be an amazing accomplishment to get the amazing graphics shown in the 1st screenshot on an iDevice! Still, it definitely looks better than Asphalt 4. Anyone know when this game is supposed to hit the App Store?

Looking forward to more stuff from Gamescom for other iPhone games.

    this really looks slick.

look like A5 graphic is better than A4..

"The translation is unclear whether the "network" multiplayer is online or local only"

You have a guy from Gameloft on the last June keynote saying A5 will have worldwide online multiplayer (and VOIP), isn´t that pretty clear? Please…

  • Chris says:

That first pic of A5 can't be real, it looks too good!

  • sa66o6 says:

Come on guys, don't you understand why the firs one looks better. As the guy from gameloft sad, asphalt 5 features advance lightning effects, dynamic shadows and hi-res textures, the firs screen is from the day,the second is from a night track,so in the second there is no shadows and so bright lightning. It is simple!!!!

  • Gaga says:

The guy from macnotes.de writes in the comments that Jochen Brach (Marketing and PR Manager at Gameloft) said that A5 might make use of the capabilities of the iPhone 3GS.. That could explain the better looking first screenshot…

Furthermore he writes in his article that the game felt pretty finished and that he didn't notice any bugs. He points out that the release of this game might not be so far.

  • LBG says:

Any one know if there will be bikes in Asphalt 5? That's all I care about.

  • benjamin says:

the first screenshot looks defenately better than the second(A5).i think that as we al know with our computers that we can chose on the idevece, what textures we want.

  • iPhone1984 says:

the idea about the second screen being a screenshot from a previous build of A5 than the first screen could be possible, as the first screen seems to have stars underneath the nitrous bar, maybe they added this in at a later time than the 2nd screen? see what i mean?

  • Tomchap says:

In the second screen shot the car looks very blocky indeed whereas in the first screen shot, they look great.

Lets hope it is because of early development photos. I cant see the reasoning behind night screen shots looking worse than day ones. The quality should be the same day or night.

    Looks a cracker though!

  • Qasim says:

Damn!! Those Asphalt 5 graphics look incredible!

Looks like we've got another arcade racer. I just hope the controls for tilting are better then Asphalt 4. But I'm super shocked to see these! Wow @ gameloft! Superb graphics! lol

  • Ahiru says:

1st screen is not real, the 2nd one is (look how worse it is)
like @crishnak said, it's pure concept art:

in the 1st pic, the resolution is way higher the other one, the nitro effect has some glow effect or something (the other is a plain orange thingy), won't even comment on the car sizes, shadows, etc.. oops i just did…

  • matriax says:

Asphalt 5 looks amazing! And i'm waiting for Jim!

  • spiffyone says:

TO HELL WITH HOW THE GAME LOOKS!!!

Seriously, I'm more interested in how it controls.

Asphalt 4 had initially great controls using the accelerometer, but then Gameloft issued an update (shocking, I know ;) ) and completely RUINED the accelerometer controls. It used to be "tilt a little, turn a little" and "drift by quickly tilting into a turn and tilting away from it, and easing the tilt to control the drift". Smooth as butter. People RAVED about the controls.

Then Gameloft issued that blasted "update". Apparently they fixed the touch controls, but they absolutely RUINED the accelerometer controls. After the "update", it became "tilt a little, go right into an nearly uncontrollable drift". Waaayyyy too sensitive. Completely ruined the game. It went from Asphalt to Ass Fault.

So, to hell with the graphics. The better question: Does the game control like Asphalt, or does it control like Ass Fault?

    Bikes are included!
