388183_4Gameloft just released their much anticipated Gangstar [link] game to the App Store today at the promised $6.99 price.

Gangstar, which is an enhanced port of their 2006 mobile handset title, is set in an expansive world (Los Angeles) that strives to bring the modern, 3D home console Grand Theft Auto experience to iPhone gamers. We took a detailed look at a preview copy of the title back in July.

The game is a free-roam sandbox affair, with LA being the sandbox. And the game world is actually modeled after LA with some accuracy. Hollywood, Santa Monica, South Central, and other well-known areas of the city are represented with many distinguishing characteristics in place. Portions of the game are also played through sequences that are flashbacks to Pedro's time in the Mexican pen.

This new trailer was also released today:

We were impressed by the game during our preview and will spend more time with the final version. Early impressions of the game are being collected in our forum.

    It's out already? Wow

  • Tanukitsune says:

Gameloft has never pulled a mad sale before, right?

I'd hate to pay full price only to see it for 99c the next day! D:

    • Adam says:

the only "big" sale i know of is the hero of sparta sale. the most they would drop the price would be about $2-$3. i might just wait about a week or so and see what happens. although, theyve also lowered some prices on their games perminently.

The game may be good, but I just can’t get over the name. Gang Starr (http://bit.ly/1MQV8) has been around forever, guys; the name’s taken.

  • SalsaMD says:

What happened to the 3GS specific version? : (

  • ltcommander.data says:

Yes, are there enhancements for the 2nd gen iPod Touch and the iPhone 3G S? I'm not expecting a completely separate code base, but for a sandbox game like Gangster, the 2nd gen iPod Touch could easily support longer draw distances and more peds and vehicles. The iPhone 3G S even more so.

I can't believe they rated this game 12+. if it were on any other platform it would have easily been rated M. I think it's time the ESRB step in and start rating apps. It shouldn't be left up to the developer. The dev wants as many sales as possible so they're not going to want to exclude a huge age group from buying their app. So they don't rate it accurately.

    • crsrc says:

yes, cause ratings prevent kids from buying mature games.

    • Dave says:

      Corey,

I hear you. It should have an M rating. No question about it. Looks decent but I'll pass. I've had enough of these games. By the way anyone who complains at this point about a price drop when they buy their games on release day is ridiculous. Everyone now knows how the game is played.

  • Cory Gillmore says:

Yes, they actually do. So do parental controls. I always have to show my ID when buying M rated games. And the iPhones parental controls prevent kids from buying age inpropriate games. But when the games aren't being rated accurately it defeats the purpose.

  • Cory Gillmore says:

    Great game by the way.

  • nerd says:

    yeahhhhhh

another copy paste game from gameloft. this sux

  • Andrew H says:

i can't wait to play this…downloading as we speak.

  • benjamin says:

does it run well on an ipod touch 2nd gen or 3G iphone?tests?results?crashes/problems?
can someone make and/or post a gameplay video with some content of the game to show.
    thanks in advance.

So tired of the gameloft anger, they are putting games on the iPhone no one else is. I'm tired of the few hundred match 3 games or yet another word game. Who else has put out games like NFL 2010 or gangstar, you wait for EA to be your savior (they aren't).

  • Hobbs says:

oh snap, i was gonna buy PayBack on the weekend, but for the extra 2 bucks, I'd rather get this. Hell, I'll wait till September 1st to get it. Knowing Gameloft, the game will probably be 50% off.

  • Batik says:

Look alright, but I'll wait for a sale of $1.99 or less, since I'm not going to play now anyway. Knowing Gameloft that will probably be in a few months.

  • peteo says:

So After a few minutes controls seem good, like other gameloft games when walking. There is no calibration for driving with the accelerometer or wheel, they are not fast enough for me soIi have to use the stick control setting (a horizontal rectangle you slide your finger on). Really looks like a mini GTA 3 in your hand!
Cant wait to play more, but im at work and have to go to some artsy fartsy thing with the wife after :(
Oh well at least I can play in the car while she drives home!

  • Tekkaman says:

It's freezing up on me I restarted, but it still is freezing. I'm on a 3G

  • Jeff says:

    THIS GAME IS DOOOOOOPE

  • iPound says:

I'm getting like 20 to 30sec lags/about every 45sec when i play the game… Is anyone else having this problem??

  • Bob says:

It's running nice and smooth for me, but I have an iPhone 3GS so it should run smooth for me.

  • Kintaro360 says:

Damn, now it really pays off buying the 3GS :D

And for the GameLoft Haters: GameLoft is stil far away from being the EA of the iPhone and they have the balls for bigger projects than other "match 3" programmers.

  • Compton4Life says:

This game looks terrible! It looks like Driver 1… The Iphone sucks
