Id Software QuakeCon Sale – Doom Resurection $2.99 and Wolfenstein 3D Classic 99¢

320px-Quakecon_logoIn honor of QuakeCon this weekend, Id Software has significantly dropped the prices of both Doom Resurrection [App Store] (Originally $9.99, now $2.99) and Wolfenstein 3D Classic [App Store] (Originally $2.99, now 99¢). If you were holding back on getting either games, now is the time to buy as the sale will only run until QuakeCon is over on the 16th.

Doom Resurrection utilizes Doom 3 assets to create a game with visuals that hold their own even when compared to the graphical giants of the App Store like Real Racing. Not quite a traditional first person shooter, Doom Resurrection is on rails and is controlled using the accelerometer to move a targeting reticule around the screen. In our review, we found Doom Resurrection to be "pretty awesome" and at this price hopefully some of the rails naysayers will take the leap of faith and give the game a try.

Wolfenstein 3D, first released in 1992, is the game that popularized the first shooter person genre. In the iPhone version, all six original episodes are included with 60 total levels and four different control layouts. The controls in the iPhone Wolfenstein 3D are generally regarded on our forums to be among the best for first person shooters, so if nothing else the game is worth checking out to see John Carmack's idea of how games like this should be controlled with the limited input methods available on the iPhone.

Crap! I just bought Doom Res pretty recently, but I must say it was more than worth the 10 bucks. But for all those who were complaining about the price GET IT NOW!

  • slizoo says:

    where's doom classic ?!

  • Josh says:

I agree slizoo, I want Doom Classic!

ha, just an hour ago I Tweeted that.

  • ZZMitch says:

Darn, bought Resurrection 2 weeks ago. Oh well, still was worth it!

  • dojjah says:

YES! Been waiting for Doom Res to go on sale, and I was hoping for 4.99 but 2.99.. awesome! However the price in the appstore for doom still says 9.99 when you go to buy, what gives! It says 2.99 when you look at in the list.

Doom Resurrection is awesome, recommended to anyone who enjoys FPS games (its like playing an FPS with only your mouse hand, and a dodge key… and it works VERY well).

As for Wolf 3D's controls, they are great… for a 2D FPS.
They only apply to games with no vertical axis, which is a small subset of the FPS genre (basically Wolf and Doom from the early 90s.)

  • spiffyone says:

    All of 'em are recommended.

Know the prices would drop, as DR fell out of the top 100 a couple of weeks back…but they had a helluva run. I don't agree with so drastic a price drop business wise (I mean, honestly, I've got a feeling quite a good deal of you fence sitters would've bought it had it dropped to, say, $5.99), but if it means more people buy that great game, it's good for the platform.

  • RazLeBOL says:

    Awesome!! Grabbed both.

  • TKO says:

Have resurrection now. Had Wolf for a while already .. very very good game still. Agree with sticktron: very good controls for a 2d FPS. Leaves me happy that Doom Classic will be similarly good. I think, when companies are designing FPS games for the iPhone, they should seriously consider sticking with the 2d model (or auto vertical-aiming like Doom does.) Keeps the controls nice and simple, as they need to be on the iPhone.

  • jenday says:

wow i just robbed id software by getting both games at the combined price of £2.28, i recommend other just do the same b/c theres hours of fun to be got from these for little cost

  • Adams Immersive says:

Doom Res is great. And the best-looking game on my iPhone, too.

Now release the Mac version of Quake Live and my QuakeCon life will be complete!

  • Sicko says:

Quick question: In the gameplay video above for DR, when enemies are sneaking up from behind, is the camera automatically swivelling around to face them or does the player have to do that? I can't make that out. Thanks

  • Hai says:

It's on-rail, meaning every path are pre-determined. You don't get free roaming. Yet this is still the best first person shooting(almost) as of now until Modern Combat comes out.

  • backtothis says:

    robbed them :]

  • ravenvii says:

Wow, this is highway robbery. Favoring us, of course!

    Snatched both games! :D

  • Jimbob Walton says:

Both games are not available in the German app store. Boooo!

  • matriax says:

    I love wolfenstein 3D :) .

  • Airspike says:

Am I the only having trouble with Doom? It keeps shutting down all the time. I haven't played a single second yet. I Get past the introduction text, but that's it. When the game is about to start, it kicks me out. Every time.

    Ipod touch 2G…

  • aen says:

no wolfenstein in the german app store :'( then doom it is…

  • BadBumble says:

I've got to agree, Doom is one of the best games on the iPhone / iPod and it runs really well on an iPhone 3G. Doom is in my top 5 iPhone games I think and will be one of the few games that I know I will play right to the end.
    Well worth the asking price.

  • Cinepod says:

Bought and completed Doom Resurrection today. I do not mind the on-rails experience and the control scheme and quick calibration works perfectly. Furthermore, you can use "free play" to increase your rank/score in any of the levels already completed in "story mode". Very nice game indeed and well worth price while on sale.

  • Steve says:

Just got Doom Resurrection today for 2.99. I looks pretty, but it's still a disappointment. The on-rails method removes one of the best parts of these games: the plotting of the route you are going to take against enemies. Flanking them, falling back, tricking them. The game makes have decided for me, and now it is one fantic shoot em up scene after another. Whereas Doom and Duke Nukem offer combat and puzzles, there is no time to breathe in this. Plus the tilt-based targeting is a further PITA. The weapons, music, sound, and graphics are top-notch but this game is plain no fun IMHO. I am having more fun with the new Duke Nukem 3D.
