There are no meritocracies in any medium. Look at the top ten movies or tv shows or bestseller lists for books. The worst crap with the best marketing always sells the most.

At least the app store and stuff like Xbox live gives indie developers a chance. A few years ago your only hope would be to release a game as shareware on the Pc.

Sadly the AppStore isn't a meritocracy like many people already pointed out. If it was then its true that the quality even from unknown developer will come to the top. But now its based on download/sales, which is why a lot of developer put their pricing very low (FREE lite version or 0.99$). Before most of those title were by other indie developer so gamer could see game made by Dave, John, Fred, Bjorn, etc... Big studio already have a lot of visibility even at higher price due that they have enough fund to make big marketing campaign and they release well known IP.

But the more big studio adopt this strategy the difficult it will be for smaller indie to be seen. As most gamer will go toward name that are familiar with (either the name of the game or the developer/publisher).

I know this is the free world and a capitalist economy, it was just my wishful thinking that the AppStore could bring more chance for new comer.

Sorry for being naive and rant about it. The hot weather probably didn't help me to think deeper.

THANK
YOU

This is my point exactly. When the competition sells games for 99 cents while you price yours at say $4,99, that simply means gamers will be able to afford both games, as opposed to having to pick and choose between two games that cost five bucks.

All this whining is completely unmerited.

At .99 price point games become commodity items (like a bag of chips or a soda). Your not competing against this game since anyone who can afford this game can also afford your game in addition. You'll have to work to get your game noticed for its merits, its very doubtful this game or any other will have a direct impact on your sales at the .99 price point. It becomes a question of how well you can market your game at that point.

You, sir, are tripping balls.

Your fears are unfounded and a tad ridiculous, I dare say. Relax.

Because this game was released last year and has likely paid for itself over and over?
