I think games like Chess and Checkers are better played on a 2D board. Anyway, you can easily beat the AI by following a simple strategy: Don't move your bottom four pieces and just concentrate on turning one of your other pieces into a king. It is a bit too easy, even on harder where they let obvious chances to beat me and ends I managed to beat it on harder in 23 moves.
