ngmoco's Star Defense [App Store] is finally here for $5.99! I competed in the Twitter Challenge a while ago and I've had my hands on the final copy for a few days now. So far, Star Defense has been an enjoyable spin on the tower defense genre. Expect a full review soon, but for now, here's part of the press release ngmoco sent out:

picture-3

In Star Defense, players battle hordes of alien S’rath invaders in their quest to save human outposts across the galaxy. Using innovative Multi-Touch controls, players twist, spin, and zoom-in on breathtaking 3D planets and examine the terrain to plan their defenses.

Armed with a powerful arsenal of five classes of towers, for a grand total of 15 different weapons, players strategically place turrets that unleash everything from burning hot plasma to high-voltage decimation. The S’rath regularly fortify their troops with new unit types, new formations and new armor. Survival depends on the player’s ability to respond to their maneuvers in real time.

Innovative integration with social networks allows players to expand their campaigns and compete with friends over Twitter, Facebook, or email. They can also check out scores posted by other Star Defense players and take on all challengers by searching for #StarDefense on Twitter.

With seven unique planets, two different game modes, more than 50 Medals and Commendations to be earned on the field, and three different difficulty settings available at launch, Star Defense offers endless replayability for newcomers and war-hardened veterans alike.

ngmoco will provide regular updates to the game with expansion packs, bringing new weapons, planets, invaders and new modes of gameplay to the Star Defense universe.

As I mentioned in the keynote post, we have a ngmoco press conference to attend at 4:00 PM PST. I'm not sure what is going to be discussed, but hopefully we'll find out a little more about their plans with the future of Star Defense.

Update: ngmoco posted on our forums clarifying the content of the game and future updates:

For $5.99, you are getting the full SD experience. That's an entire seven-planet galaxy, three difficulty modes, and a challenge mode. We'll also be regularly updating the game with free content.

Once 3.0 launches, we'll be offering much larger expansion packs for sale.

I thought this was already out? I guess it wasn't.

I like the idea of additional level-packs/whatever bought in-game. More TD without taking up more home-screen space! Of course, it depends on how MUCH content you get, and for what price. But on the surface, I like the idea. (Naturally, never-ending new FREE game content is also an idea I like... but I'm not sure that works :p )

So with all the expansions this will be a 20-something dollar game? As much as my wife would kill for something like this, I'm gonna pass on this first glimpse into micro-transaction hell.

A bit too late for TD games, I think.
At the moment, it's Geometry Wars time, lol.

Well, it's neither "hell" nor $20 until we know the details and they turn out to be unfair. And assuming the details are bad without knowing would be... unfair :)

If the game is worth the $6 already (which it sure looks to be) then it's a good deal even if you NEVER upgrade. (And then some updates are likely to be free as usual.)

If the future paid updates add up to $20 and they're worth it, then that would be awesome. $20 is nothing for a game on other platforms. That much upgrade cost on a $6 app could bring a LOT of content--which would be great, speaking as a TD fan.

Of course, you don't HAVE to get all updates, you only get what you want to. So who cares if the total of all optional paid updates costs $5 or $75... just so long as they have enough content to be worth it. Those who want a given update will buy. Others won't wish to. That's not much of a hell. In fact, it's a way to bring us content we would otherwise never get at all.

Of course, any app OR any paid update that is NOT worth its price would be bad. But I see no reason to assume that's happened here without any reviews. On the contrary, it looks like a great game out-of-the-box, and for all we know, updated content (which DOES take time/work/money to produce) may well be priced very fairly.

    @Adams, well put!

I have nothing to add except to reiterate that $5.99 will get you a full game with free updates that are already in progress. Any in-game commerce that will be implemented with 3.0 will be a supplemental experience. The example from the WWDC keynote was adding entire new galaxy of seven more planets--literally doubling the size of the game for just a few dollars.

    Thanks for reading.

looks like it will hurt my brain. I'm still enjoying towermadness but I'm tempted by this. I'm just not sure it will be fun or a headache

I won't write a huge Spiel here (save it for the forums), but suffice to say, I have no complaints so far. In fact the opposite. The whole 3D thing is great. Serves a little like a pseudo fog of war, as you have to spin the planet around to see what damage is being done on the other side. The atmos is spot on. In general I feel I can relax in the knowledge that I know with ngmoco, I am not going to be up against the usual bugfest, or genrally crappy production values. They really pay attention to detail (whether or not you liked Rolando as a game, no one can deny the quality of what was achieved).
So, very happy. Having said all that, one wish would be for an option for the towers to be placed on the left for Left-handers such as myself. Is that swingable?: )

LOL an "entire" 7 maps. wow, gee, so much content...
so what they're really saying is exactly what we figured: $6 for the bare bones game, plus $2-4 for the rest of the maps. Screw that. What a terrible model. Thanks Apple, for completely ruining the structure of apps with this new 3.0 pay-til-you-drop model. Ugh.

THIS ISN'T OTHER PLATFORMS so stop comparing it to completely different platforms. It's a freakin' PHONE / media device. And with a touchscreen at that, not even real tactile controls.

You drawing pricing across platforms is like trying to argue that a Kia compact should cost as much as an S-class Benz. That's stupid and illogical, so stop doing it.

I also hate micro transactions. If i'm going to pay to try the game out and be asked to pay for additional content that should have been included in the original sale.... I'll pass.

$6 is too much for a tower defense game even if it does have 3D graphics, in my opinion of course.

I was interested until I saw the price, I'll either wait for a price drop or I'll speak with my wallet and spend my dollars elsewhere.

    @ Randy

So, you're one of those buyers who buys a 99 cents game and then expects the devs to churn out multiple updates for FREE? You do realize that under the present system the devs get paid only once. They don't get paid a dime for multiple updates people like you seem to think they are entitled to.

Star Defense is a complete game. Look at other TD games in the app store. How many of them come with SEVEN maps? Heck, Fieldrunners has only 3 maps and it's still the most popular TD game in the app store. The bottom-line is you don't have to buy the extra features if you don't want to. I, for one, would gladly pay a dollar or two for extra maps in games like the Creeps, Fieldrunners and Geodefense.

No, nor does that have anything to do with what I said. Unlike you, the rest of us expect a game to have content and re-playability worthy of its price. $6 is already a steep price for an app, especially a tower defense game (most of the best ones out are $2.99 or less and offer a lot more content). To then try to squeeze even more $$$ out of the customer for content that should have been in it from the start is laughable.

Seeing as how ngmoco has delivered quite a few many quality games for a few bucks or less, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they are offering a good deal of content for the price charged, and a good deal of content for the price for add-ons.

I mean, really, does anyone moan when you pay $60 for halo and an additional $10 bucks later for level packs?

In the last year I've spent less on iPhone games than on console games, but have gotten more playtime and a much larger selection of titles on the iPhone. Quit complaining people. Sheesh.

    1) 6 bucks for a very well-made game is a great deal

    2) 7 maps for a TD game is above par

    3) You already deal with all KINDS of pay-to-play models. Are you people effing retarded? WoW is worth 15 bucks PER MONTH. Diablo 2 had an expansion. It cost money. Did you buy it? Of course!

Stop being such whiny little children! I'm sick of it!!

If you want good developers to produce quality stuff, you have to let the market shake out and speak with your dollars instead of whine on the boards.

Well, I've purchased it and played thru the first two or three planets.

Frankly, I find the game a bit boring, while I do admit that its music and audio effects are FAR better than those of Sentinel, my TD favorite. So is the video. Too bad the entire 3D scheme, in my opinion, greatly slows down play and makes creating a strategy far harder (you don't see what's on the other side of the planet, unlike in 2D TD games etc.)

I may come to be addicted to the game in the future, though - currently, I just don't want to play it whenever and wherever I can, unlike Sentinel.
