As mentioned in an earlier post, Apple's WWDC keynote took place this morning and the new iPhone 3G S, the fastest member of the iPhone family, was announced.  On the software front, iPhone OS 3.0 took center stage and a number of games and apps were demonstrated that utilize OS 3.0 functionality.  Among them were Gameloft's Asphalt 5 and ngmoco's (just released) Star Defense.  We were able to capture brief videos of the games in action during the keynote.

Gameloft's Mark Hickey demonstrated Asphalt 5, which he calls the best racing game on the iPhone.  Featuring online (WiFi) multiplayer and peer-to-peer (Bluetooth) one-on-one, Asphalt 5 will take advantage of iPhone OS 3.0 by offering content packs for sale ($.99 for a new racetrack + three new cars).

Neil Young and Stephanie Morgan of ngmoco demonstrated Star Defense, which launched today for $5.99 [App Store].  When iPhone OS 3.0 debuts, the game will feature additional, downloadable universes for a small fee.

iPhone OS 3.0 is set to debut on June 17th, free for iPhone users and a $9.95 upgrade for users of the iPod touch.  The iPhone 3G S will be available on June 19th at a price of $199 for the 16GB unit and $299 for the 32GB unit.

lol and there's another typo in the bottom. "The iPhone 3G S will be avialable on June 19th at a price of $199 for the 16GB unit and $299 for the 32GB unit." avialable. Great videos though, I wonder if Asphalt 5 will be worth it.

Fantastic!! Bring it on! Other phone companies should be peeing in their pants!

    Asphalt 5 Looks bad.
I hope they patch Real Racing with bluetooth multiplayer.

Asphalt 5 doesn't look too special. It just looks like Asphalt 4 with a a bit better graphics. I think I'll stick to Real Racing. I have never been a fan of arcade racing games (except burnout).

Also, dont forget to mention that if you currently own an iPhone 3G, it will cost you an additional $300 to upgrade to a 3GS. So, for current 3G owners the prices of the 3GS are $499 and $599 for the 16 and 32GB models, respectively.

I like Asphalt 4, so maybe a graphics boost is worth it to me! (Probably not. I'm not a big racer.)

I probably will get ONE more racing game eventually... whichever one turns out to have the best graphics on my lowly, slow, 3G non-S.

If Asphalt 5 controls like Asphalt 4 currently does, then it's a big fail. I'll never forgive Gameloft for what they did to that game's controls. What was once the pinnacle of motion control racers, with smooth controls, is now an unplayable mess since Gameloft issued that last update.

So what happens when Star Defense goes on sale, will the upgrades' costs lower too. And Asphalt 5 looks horrible. This looks like the game was in a fast forward motion... doesn't look realistic to me.

Gotta love that "BAM!" hint to Kudo Tsunoda appearance at Microsofts Press Conference last week at E3. New meme confirmed!

Except that Asphalt 5 will have live online multiplayer and VOIP. Will REal Racing have that?

"Except that Asphalt 5 will have live online multiplayer and VOIP. Will REal Racing have that?"

well adding bt voice chat is trivial so i dont see why not if they are in direct competition.. wifi multiplayer is obviously harder, but people always throw around the term "wifi multiplayer" when they mean local wifi multiplayer with other devices on your network.. which is basically p2p and is also trivial to implement.. real wifi multiplayer that goes through a centralized server is much more work to implement.

So you think adding VOIP to an iphone game is trivial?

Also..did you read what i wrote? LIVE ONLINE multiplayer, not local multiplayer, not p2p...it´s putting players racing agains each others live on the internet. And that´s what they said they were doing with A5

Just noticed you wrote "bt voice chat"...wtf is that? I´m refering to voice over ip, nothing to do with bt (i guess you mean bluetooth). It´s being able to speak to other players while racing online.

I´m available to accept a bit less graphic quality to have VOIP and live online multiplayer, with less lag and good framerate

3.0 has a voip feature so yes i think its trivial. i think it only for bt p2p though as i havent tried to use that api. if they arnt using the api i dont see why theyd just now decide to add voip to the game.

First I felt that the iPhone 3GS was very underwhelming besides the somewhat improved camera and edit software (if the softwares is good and 3.0 take good pics then I'll change my mind) and when I saw Asphalt 5 I loved it the instant I saw it. Thank You TA!!!! you made my day! :DDDDDDDDDD But if they incorporate the "improved" control sensitivity like Asphalt 4 with the update then there goes Gameloft. I remember playing with Asphalt 4 before the update trying to get the best car with the best parts.

I'm not a fan of Gameloft. They havent really made any app that i consider great. Asphalt 5 looks like more hype than substance... which is typical of gameloft titles.

Firemint's real racing looks how gameloft makes their game sound. When you look at that asphalt 5 video, its clear that improved control etc is fantasy. Theres no such thing. Real Racing looks to have better control, where as Asphalt 5 looks like asphalt 4 with new art.

So,as a developer, do you pitch a game at the mass Market or the small 3G S Market ? Will there be a seperate appstore for gles 2.0 apps ? How many ipod touch users will upgrade to 3.0 firmware just so they can be charged for extra content ? This is all starting to get a bit disjointed apple.....

Real Racing from Firemint blows Asphalt 5 out of the water. I'm glad I skipped both Asphalt and NFS. Gameloft is too similar to EA.

@lazrhog I'm sure developers would be able to ship one version of a game, which would detect the host iPhone / iPod Touch and tailor its graphics accordingly. This article on Pocket Gamer seems to confirm that:

    http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/iPhone+3G+S/feature.asp?c=13757

I'm sure lots of iPod Touch owners will upgrade. $10, to extend the feature-set of the device and enable all sorts of new apps through the APIs? I wouldn't hesitate...
