$0.99 Madness: Underworlds, Kroll, Creeps and Gemmed

posted May 18th, 2009 2:51 AM EDT by arn in Sales

krollA few sales and updates that we think are noteworthy.

  • Underworlds ($2.99 -> $0.99) - A fun action RPG that we liked a lot. It's gone on sale to $0.99 for 24 hours. That started sometime yesterday, so hopefully you'll have time to pick it up before the sale ends.
  • The Creeps! ($0.99) - The new Creeps! update that we previously detailed is now live with several new maps, enemies and towers. The update is being discussed here.
  • Gemmed! ($0.99) - One of our favorite Match 3 games has seen a number of updates since we reviewed it back in January. The game now includes Classic, Casual, Endless and Survival modes. If you missed this game before, it's time to take a look again.
  • Kroll ($4.99 -> $0.99) - We had some misgivings about this release when it came out at $7.99, but with a new discount to $0.99, it's a pretty good value for the visuals alone. Gameplay is kinda simple -- but hey, it's $0.99.

Wow, Kroll has never been updated. Not once. It kinda seems like the deveIoper abandoned the project. I wonder if the 99 cent price drop is the one last milking of the product before it get booted out of the app store for not being 3.0 compatible.

Boy that sounds alot like what all the indie developers are doing sucking every last penny out of our small pockets. Those bastards =)

Far from it. According to pocketgamer.co.uk an update is due soon, possibly even before the end of the month. The developer says they will be adding 30% more levels, new enemies, and various bug fixes.

Kroll was feature complete. It did not need an update. It had sound and multiple levels and the controls were great and the framerate was smooth. Why should they create an update?

For 99 cents, this game is a steal.

I don't get why so many people hate this game. I paid the full price and even that was ok back in that early days of the AppStore. Kroll was the first game, which really showed, what the device is capable of!

Well, "feature complete" except for the features that were left out. The WWDC video showed jumping, somersaults, sliding on ropes, none of which made it into the game. The could have added all of this, more levels, more varied monsters to fight (like the flying one in the WWDC video - was that in the game? I don't remember).

For the record, I paid full price for Kroll too, and I had fun with it, but DL didn't deliver on it's promises. They seemed to rush the game to market to make the promised September date (strangely their website still calls it an "upcoming" game). They could've added the other features later, as have many other games, but they didn't. Just disappointing.

Doh! Serves me right for not holding out for better price drops! I just bought Underworld the day before for $2.99. Guess I won't buy anything anymore unless it is $.99

Underworlds: Game is kinda ugly. Terrible Controls. Most people that paid more than 99c for this game are in denial.

The Creeps: Probably the most enjoyable out of all these.

Gemmed: Never played it. Looks ok.

Kroll: Paid $8 when it first came out. My first impressions were great until I found out all I'll be doing is swinging a mace throughout the whole game. Game is too short. Worth the 99c asking price now.

Picked up Underworlds for 99 cents. I was a casual fan of Diablo. Underworlds is good. At first, I thought the view was too zoomed out, with the character looking too small, but then I think that if it were more zoomed in, you wouldn't be able to see enough of the dungeon at one time. So I think it's ok as is. I started out touch where I wanted to go, but now have started using the directional pad, and I actually like it better. One thing that seems unnecessary and annoying is the ability to snuff out torches. I did this accidentally a lot when I was touching where I wanted to go, and all it does is turn out the lights in that area, but I don't see how this could be useful to a player, and it's pretty annoying to keep doing it accidentally. I'd suggest the game author remove that feature.

hey! someone mentioned that Underworlds will be at 0,99 for 24h only.... but in fact it still sells for 0,99, so I'm gonna get it right now!
On Kroll, I got it a few weeks ago and although the gameplay is simple, it's pretty much fun for a mindless beat'em-up what a shame I didn't get it for a buck! I show off with my friends now that I've unlocked all the boss battles it does show what this phone can do! the big problem and these guys needed to fix is that if the giant kills you, apart that I want more lives! you have to start again at the end of the level and dont' want to have to run all the 3 levels again, that's very disappointing. But now with everything unlocked looks awesome! For a buck is great value for money but hope the guys update it...
