seabattle

The screams of seamen echo in the deep and wild seas. Now, the seamen will go through an adventure, risking their lives, fighting at sea. Advance to where no human has been before and become a master of Sea.

And so the stage is set for the salty, high seas shooter that is WarShip [App Store] from Goorusoft.

WarShip is basically a simple, pick-up game of high seas cannon warfare.  (Master and Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean -- that sort of thing.)  In short, it's something quite like a pocket version of the sea battle sequences from Sid Meier's Pirates.  There's nothing much beyond that, but that's ok, really.  Now, don't get me wrong -- there's little I'd rather see land on the iPhone more than a quality port of Sid Meier's Pirates.  But, in truth, no dramatic backstory is needed to feel the satisfaction of piercing enemy vessels with high-speed orbs of iron, let loose at your command.

Controls are a simple matter of tilt your iPhone to steer, tap to fire at the closest enemy.  And try to show your adversary the thin profile when the barrage is on its way.

Wounded and sunken enemies cast off booty and, once collected, it can be used to upgrade ship features and buy new and mightier vessels, each with unique features.  But don't let the pirates ravage your coffers...  The game features several play venues to choose from in and around the Mediterranean and East Pacific.

WarShip is a rather simple game, but those who sailed under Captain Meier and enjoyed the ship-to-ship battles at sea may want to plunder the App Store for this one.

Played it, tilting to turn is terrible.

    • FFace

Tilt controls are kind of cool, but not when they're the only option. For one thing you look like an idiot waving your iPhone around if you playing in public.

      • Guest

the app actually has the option to use tuch controls, tilting isn't the only option, amybe yu should actually TRY to configure the controls rather than spout out bs

I've been buying a lot of $4.99 games recently, and for what this game is, $2.99 seems a little high...

funny how they don't mention that.

Maybe I should have got that instead :(. I got warship and it's pretty bad been playing for over an hour. I still can't get used to the controls and it makes me mad to think how horribly I'm doing

      • ricky

that game really isn't all that great either.

"pirates: sea battle 2" wasn't that bad, though the gameplay was kinda shallow. it was only 99 cents anyways. this game's graphics looks much, much better but i'm afraid of the complaints about the controls. also i don't know if it has that much to offer over SB2 since it's a very similar game.

This game is NOT recommended by me. Agree, game controls are terrible, also, the whole package seems badly designed.

It would be great if someone took an engine like that and combined it with something a bit like warfare Inc to make a real time strategy game at sea.

There was a cool Warhammer Fantasy Battle spin off called Man O War

least that's what I saw when I watched the video preview... bugger having just the one ship, give me a whole fleet so I might crush the spanish armarda

I don't understand the control complaints. You turn left. You turn right. Not on a dime, but then, you're controlling a large sail ship. Can someone elaborate on their specific control complaints?

I'm not saying this is my favorite game, but whatever criticisms there are (and I said it was not a deep, multifaceted game -> "In short, it's something quite like a pocket version of the sea battle sequences from Sid Meier's Pirates. There's nothing much beyond that..."), I don't see controls being one of them.

A naval warfare game should at least include some movement constraints based on wind direction. These are sailing ships after all. It would be interesting to add some depth by letting the user pick some pre-set sail configurations and then have to maneuver based on those and the wind direction. Finally, these ships had fore and aft (front and back) cannons, as well as short and long range cannons. This needs another layer of depth to be worthwhile.

Present a thin profile to the shooter? IIRC, the smart thing to do when you are being bombarded is to turn sideways. The hull is strongest in the sides and there's a chance that the eney shots fly over your ship. And you can return fire when you are sideways. If you turn lengthwise you expose the vulnerable parts of your ship to the enemy, you make it easier for the enemy to hit you since they can now hit your deck and you make it impossible for your ship to return fire.

I have to tell you, I love this game. Not sure exactly why, but I do.

It is fun to play, never having played anything like it. I bought it after playing the beta and finished it (bought the best ship) in a day. I think it is a lot of fun to play. Would love to see this game continually updated with new features like those listed above. Definitely would be a lot of fun as multiplayer over wifi, over the internet with rankings, etc.

Needs more levels and maybe even a "continuous mode" where ships comes at random in different waves of attack. Certainly a randomly generated level would be good, too (how hard could that be to implement??).

I have no problem with the controls, either. They are extremely easy to get used to.

There is a web based game that is similar to this, but wind effects ships, and is also a trading game:
