Ngmoco Posts 'Rolando 2' Game Trailer Video

posted by Blake Patterson on May 6th, 2009 1:36 PM EDT in Platform, Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games

rolando2Ngmoco has just posted a Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid trailer video on the studio's Rolando 2 website.

The trailer video reveals that the game, created by ngmoco and HandCircus, features very clean "2.5D" gameplay with an impressive perspective shifting mechanic that flows along with the motion, as can be seen in the latter portion of the trailer.  As Matt from ngmoco had hinted in our forums, Rolando 2 has a rather new look, indeed.

The studio provides the following details.

With dozens of levels and four unique worlds, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid builds upon the success of the original with an epic new quest filled with action and surprise behind every touch. In Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid players will face innovative physics-based puzzles, a host of new enemies and an exciting new world with a fresh new look. Available in Summer 2009, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid features an innovative non-linear story design where player choice determines how the tale unfolds. Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid has been exclusively created for the iPhone™ and iPod touch by Simon Oliver’s micro-studio Hand Circus.

Stay tuned for more details on Rolando 2 as we get them.

To promote the game, ngmoco is submitting new levels and updates to the original Rolando [App Store] and Rolando Lite [App Store] titles each week until Rolando 2 launches.

Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid is due for release in "Summer 2009."

Great to hear about more updates to Rolando. The video to Rolando 2 looks very nice.

  • Justin Goodman says:

    Looks great!

  • Dudehuge says:

Ok, I'm one of the people that thought Rolando 2 was a mere cash-in. But that trailer proved me wrong, I think :P

  • me:) says:

looks graéat, but the 2.5D graphics look pretty dissapionting… i hope you can switch from 2.5D to 2D

  • Thorero says:

This certainly looks excellent, the 2.5D graphics really have me excited, as does the mine cart level. Can't wait for more news and trailers.

  • Mystic says:

Wow that looks good. I really like the new 2.5D look to it!

  • WolfgangK says:

I agree, really digging the 2.5D graphics. Adds a nice layer of depth to the game.

-I highly doubt they'd design the game to allow user switching between the flatter 2D look of Rolando, to this. WYSIWYG.

  • Dogmeat says:

I like how this is called quest for the golden orchid, but in the video, the orchid is silver.

  • 5jusername says:

why is this tagged with 99 cents? looks really good. i was one of those people who didnt really want to buy rolando. i got the lite version. but this game is really cool. my first choice will be to buy it. if i somehow cannot, i will at least get the (hopefully) also releasing lite version

  • whooley says:

R2 with the 2.5D graphics looks more like Little Big Planet, no?

Will be interesting to see how that perspective works if you're rolling the iPhone around – it's a lot easier to rotate a flat 2D background and have it look natural.

  • Jake Lee says:

I like the new look of the game, I will be buying the minute it comes out.

  • oatherton says:

    Wow!
And there i was wondering wether a sequel would interest me seeing as i haven't even bothered to finish the first one…
    This looks excellent.

  • Tom says:

    LOOKS AMAZING!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

  • Marc says:

those bright colors somehow remind me of lego starwars :) Looks like a lot of fun!

  • Dan says:

yes, the 2.5D is great, but I am more excited about the level design. These new ones look more complex and challenging. I can't wait!

  • Looks fun and extremely pretty. Awesome!

  • arta says:

Looks great! Thought it would have been a rehash of the first one but I was wrong.

Please add the option to move around without tilting (i.e. press extreme left/ right side of the screen to move!

  • Phil says:

Graphics are nice although I would prefer either an option to switch to 2D, because from the looks of the video the 2.5D graphics do not add a new level of difficulty to the game or a clever mix of both – like switching from 2D to 2.5D in certain levels automatically.

  • Scott says:

    amazing! I will buy!

  • Jim says:

    TOAST!
That looks so good. I love the puffer-fish-type-rolando-guy. I hope there is some new music, however. The sample in the video just reminded me how monotonous the few Rolando tracks got.

  • Dave says:

Am I the only one that thinks Locoroco kicks Rolando's a$$?

I have tried to like Rolando but I hate the jumping mechanism and it just isn't nearly as clever or fun as Locoroco to me. I just never felt the tilt/jump worked as well as it could have in Rolando. Also the speed is too slow…

    • Mystic says:

Am I the only one that didn't know LocoRoco was out on the iPhone? Oh wait, IT'S NOT!

    • Rocco says:

Rolando less clever than Loco Roco?
You DIDN'T play Rolando or just have fun hating this game.
But in terms of cleverness, Rolando is another (higher) level!

  • Rocco says:

    Level design looks gorgeous!
Just the characters don't fit anymore.
They look like dead pieces of (badly cut) paper now….
    Really doesn't fit.
If 2.5D, then for everything. Make the Rolandos look like M&Ms :)
Still circles, but with a volume…. that would look fantastic.

  • UIM_yuki says:

This looks cute! Kinda reminds me of the Parappa's graphic concept.. which I think it totally worked… and this one looks even better with smooth rendering. I'm curious to see how it'll feel on the iPhone screen.

  • Wabaam says:

    This looks freaking sweet!!!!!

  • albtraum says:

Looks cool! Paper Mario with balls!

  • Shane says:

    Looks flippin' awesome.

  • dave says:

i wanted to so love rolando. I bought it day 1. but i too thought game mechanics were too hard to keep me interested. i was bored after level 1. yeah thats weak on my part but im 40, with a job and a home business and a phone filled to brim with cool stuff that wants my attention. if they dont hok me early, i feel i wasted my time.
(geo defense is my fav game fyi)

my first thought when i saw this was it looked like a pop art masterwork. But i thought the same of rolando 1.

Hope they put out a lite version early on.

    • Dave says:

We must live parallel lives (other than owning your own business part). I could not agree more. In fact I cannot load another game on my phone until I delete one. There seems to be an 8 page limit to the number of apps you can have. And if the game isn't fun or add something interesting it's gone the next time I see something else I want on the app store.

I too bought it at $9.99 and was happy to do so for an app that was supposed to be "better" than LocoRoco. IMO it's not even close. It could have been great. But the mechanics are sub par and that makes any game signifcantly less viable. (Jumping should have been a simple tap on the screen not a finger swipe to name but one of my gripes.). I know I'm in the minority here. I'm glad so many people like it. I will definately give R2 a look, but you can be sure I'll wait for the lite version first.

  • Tunawrap says:

Is it just me, or do they look a bit more asian?

  • Moff says:

    Pass.

  • munkee says:

Finally they move on from ripping off LocoRoco

  • alas24 says:

locoroco was ten times better than rolando.
Rolando is fun and cool but after a while of playing it just seemed like work. like i was playing just to finish the game and move on. the secret levels concept didnt really interest me either. ill get number 2 but it better be a lot of fun this time.
