Retro Shooter 'Saucelifter' Gets v1.1 Update
posted by Blake Patterson on April 28th, 2009 11:54 AM EDT in $1.99, Retro, Shooter, iPhone games, iPod touch games
Madgarden has released an update to its Choplifter-inspired rescue action shooter Saucelifter [App Store] for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Gameplay involves flying your saucer to the Earth prison barracks, blasting open the doors, picking up your captive crewmates, and dropping them off at the transporter where they're beamed safely back to your alien world. This is made challenging by evil Earth forces, including tanks, laser turrets, and flying attack drones.
The version 1.1 update includes:
- Real-time Day/night cycle
- New enemy superguns
- Persistent initials for easier high-score entry
- Additional tilt sensitivity level
- Manual high-score table view (touch "Saucelifter!" title)
- Various visual and audio enhancements
- Improved menu behavior
See our review (with video) of the initial release version of the game.

NEED COWS!
Heh.
This is my favorite iPhone game right now.
I love it but man this game is tough. Downloading the update ASAP.
Love the rising sun. Fantastic update of a fantastic game! Love it.
yeah this is great and tough
I would have already given it a 5* rating but iTunes keeps telling me I have to purchase before I can rate! even though I have – Apple are looking into why
this game is just so addictive – even when you fail miserably
I'd just like to make note that the day/night cycle is not real time.
Everything about this update is great, though. This is my favorite app right now.
Right… it's not "realtime" as far as using your actual local time, but realtime as far as progressing in real time, rather than just sitting there at one daylight setting for the whole game.
Glad you guys are liking the update. Already planning the next one! Please submit your ratings in iTunes!
Oh, and there's a secret code in there now too. Hint… tap like crazy on the title/highscore space at the right time and you might see something.
Nice update, but I agree this is too hard. When I heard there was a new weapon, I thought it was for the saucer, not the earthlings! This is my current favorite iPhone game as well, and I bought it the day of release, but I really wish there was a shield. One hit and you are dead type gameplay is too frustrating. I think ideally the shield should sustain a maximum of 3 hits and on the fourth hit the saucer is destroyed. The shield should recharge after a couple of seconds if you retreat. This is roughly the same mechanic employee by Halo and while Halo is not a retro title, I think Saucelifter would benefit substantially from such a setup. Thanks!
yeah – good ideas willi, some sort of shiled would help
not I'd want it to fully recharge by backing off as that might make things too easy – maybe you earn another level of shield each time you accomplish something – like taking down three copters in a row – or getting 16 aliens from a bunker to safety
Yeah, I like the idea of a shield or slower gameplay on some 'novice' skill level. It's a brilliant game, and I totally loved Choplifter in my youth, but this is just like when the arcade game Choplifter came out: I loved it to bits but couldn't stop from dying.
Some kind of novice mode for noobs, young 'uns, and old guys like me would be appreciated.
The game totally rocks, but I want to play it longer.
Your cries have been heard.
A novice/beginner/practice/n00b mode will be included in update 1.2! Along with cool secrets for those who manage to graduate.
Not adding shields though, that would just break the gameplay for those who don't find it so hard. Perhaps for the sequel.
