If you look at the 3rd-5th screen you'll see that it is all the same background but diffrent viewing angles. I guess that disqualifies the prerendered backgrounds theory. Well I think a good texture artist can get quite alot of good graphics out of an idevice and maybe there also are some shader posibility that haven't been used that effectively till now. Just remember what an graphical impact doom 3 was by using all this bumbmapping and lighting although it had relativley low polygon models.
Another posibilty is that this game will have a bad framerate and load every 5 secs ;-)

If the backgrounds are pre-rendered, then that might mean more processing power can be used to render the characters in real time compared to games that render everything (environments AND characters) in real time.

If you really look at the characters, they aren't pushing an obscene amount of polys per character. It seems rather much in the realm of other games like Gameloft's or the upcoming Dexter game, albeit with slightly more polys. But those slightly higher poly counts on the characters are possible because the hardware isn't rendering the backgrounds in real time, so processing power can be more devoted to the characters.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=9744&page=3

Also, if you look closely, you'll see the detail isn't due to high poly counts, but rather greater quality textures than we've seen in many games on the platform (outside of Dexter, of course). The GPU used in iTouch/Phone is a PowerVR design, and those GPUs have always exhibited rather good texture capabilities. As for why the texture quality is so good...again, backgrounds are pre-rendered IMHO, which means more power for better detail on the character models.

But I'm no expert on this sort of thing. Perhaps the developers among us can give a better and more detailed answer.

Hey Spiffyone,

What about the detail of the characters on the screens. Those have to be pushing a lot of polygons to have that kind of detail. I do agree the backgrounds could be a pre-rendered image, but the characters look to good to be true.

BTW...it could be that the backgrounds are all pre-rendered, with only the character models rendered in real time. Think of the older, pre RE4 Resident Evil games. Going the pre-rendered background route could be the reason why the game screens look so high quality and "out of the realm of current iTouch/Phone games". Think about it: how many games currently on the platform use pre-rendered backgrounds rather than real time backgrounds?

Wait...apparently the GPU is fully capable of FSAA...but Apple's drivers don't expose the capability. So the device IS, in fact, capable of FSAA...but Apple's toolset doesn't allow for it. Although there's a workaround apparently.

What makes you think iTouch/Phone is incapable of FSAA? The PowerVR MBX-lite GPU specs list FSAA as a feature iirc.
