2XL Games released their much anticipated offroad motorcycle racing game tonight: 2XL Supercross [App Store].

The $7.99 game offers a truly remarkable package from the creative team who also developed Motocross Madness, ATV Offroad Fury, and MX Unleashed for other platforms. This iPhone game offers a laundry list of features:

  • Tracks designed by Motocross champion Stephane Roncada
  • 3 Modes of Play: Time Trials, Practice and Racing
  • 4 Camera views
  • 8 preset control schemes
  • 12 different tracks
  • 15 different bikes with 15 different skins
  • "Secret jump combinations"

The original developer gameplay video shows off a race with accelerometer controls:

When playing the actual game, the first thing that you notice is the high production quality of the entire game. 2XL Games offers a number of calibration options as well as 8 different control schemes. This includes accelerometer, slider or joypad steering as well as left/right handed combinations.

The game comes with 12 tracks (many locked) that can be played in Practice, Time Trial or Race modes. Locked tracks can be unlocked when placing 1st or 2nd in a race. Whips and backflips can be performed and a reference to "secret jump combinations" is mentioned in the app store description.

We recorded this video to show off the control schemes, track choices and a bit of the gameplay:

Early reactions to the game have been very positive, though some have voiced concern about a lack of "career" mode in the game. We'll offer a more in-depth look at the game after we've had more time with it.

Where are the people shouting "An iPhone will never be a PSP"?
Titles like this proof you wrong! ;)
    The production value is incredible.

  • Bartig says:

What? The iPhone can do PS2 graphics? Holy crap!

After the disappointment I felt with buying Rolando fullprice, I never thought I'd be tempted again to buy any other iPhone game for the full bunch. Until now. This looks amazing.

  • alx says:

    Rolando is GOTY

  • rev says:

Looks awesome, will have to check it out

  • kappa says:

    don't like the phisic.

  • hafiz says:

    yea,the physics are crap

  • Now we're getting somewhere! This looks extremely close to something that the Dreamcast or even the original XBOX might push out. There is some graphical stuff here that I've not seen on the iPhone up to this point – the frame rate looks to be in the upper 30's.

As for the game play? To early to tell just yet.

  • George says:

Who needs this? The PSP failed, remember… it is not about the graphics… this game looks like it will drain the battery pretty fast (the one big flaw of the iphone)…

    cheers,

  • Alan says:

I doubt the PSP failed if its still being sold, sure it only sold half as many as the DS but the DS sold a hell of a lot of units and is still doing so

How do you know how much battery it could consume? create a memory leak in a tile based game and it could be consuming way more than this.

  • George says:

3D Processing / High CPU usage, Tilt-control… consumes more battery than a 2D game (most of the time)

the PSP failed mainly because of the games… this looks like another PSP game to me… nothing to get too excited about…

    cheers,

  • hafiz says:

    not all psp games failed
monster hunter freedom 2 and crisis core:final fantasy VII are the best games ever(in my opinion)
no iphone game will top these games

  • Alan says:

How do you know its high CPU usage? have you got the source? a complex chess algorithm could use way more than this…

  • Matteo says:

I've played high graphical games like Hero of Sparta, Let's Golf, etc, and in many cases they don't consume as much battery as opposed to simple games such as chess etc which have simple graphics but require a lot of complex cpu instructions. I also find that some music apps (iShred, Airguitar etc) can also significantly drain the battery; more so than high graphical games for whatever reason, i don't know. Therefore it doesn't necessarily mean that the level of graphics output will drain the battery quickly, because it's roughly the same battery drain as playing any other game (games that utilise AI, not 2 player games such as 'connect 4' or 'morocco' where the cpu doesn't need to calculate much).

This looks like a psp game, which is great for all iphone/touch owners. All current hand held gaming systems rock, whether you like it or not is totally your own opinion…

    cheers,

  • Bartig says:

Ok ok… but does anyone know how it plays yet?

  • hafiz says:

its fun to play this game
    so i recommend buying it

  • Digital Accent says:

I think it plays really well. It has a very fast, intense feel to it and is quite smooth. This is a very polished game. A competition, or career mode of some kind might be worthwhile for some, but it's great racer – my knuckles are white.

I'm still terrible at it – I keep crashing into stuff, usually after a great first lap where I take the lead, and then I wipe out massively.

  • BigA says:

Just bought it. I'd like to see multi-player, if that wouldn't mess up the frame rate too much. Rather that than 'career mode'. I am just dying for the bike to skid! Seems very hard to get him to fall off except to drive head first into a wall. I guess a tad more in the direction of sim would be nice: ) Anybody know what 'preload' is all about? Doesn't shed any light in the 'help' section.

  • kevlar says:

preloading is compressing your suspension and releasing that compression just as you leave a jump to help you gain more height. Thats how I understand it, I'm not sure how that plays out in real life though!

    • BigA says:

aahh, now I see the light, ta for that. And there I was thinking I had a secret weapon tucked away somewhere, with which to take out 'both' opponents….just kidding; )

    • Crim says:

Yup, pre-loading allows you to get longer and higher jumps. If you've played any of the ATV or MX vs. series you'll remember that pre-loading is key to winning any of the races. $8 is still too steep for me, I'll pick it up when it hits $4.

  • Hampus says:

Wow this is a great game, great framerate and great graphics. This is also a very fun and addictive game!

  • RVP says:

Just loaded in AppSniper. $8 is steep. I'll snag it when it goes on sale and it will go on sale. They all do!!

  • drunknbass says:

anyone run this on 2g iphone? i cant get it to run a course without crashing..
ps dont tell me to reboot, i have already. although i am on 3.0 so thats prob why :(

  • hafiz says:

no probs on 1st gen ipod touch,so u're just unlucky

  • Oliath says:

Fine on my 3G. Runs like a dream.
Best racing game on the phone for me.
Handles great and very polished. Glad I got this early so I can
    hit the leaderboards hard.

  • ramon raux says:

looks okay. the controls are bad though

    • rich_952000 says:

Dude, there's like 398 different ways to reorganize and tweak the controls, mind elaborating on how they are "bad"? Have you even played the game?

      Some people:p

  • RustyShackleford says:

This game has really upped the bar for games on the iPhone/iPod Touch, in my opinion. The graphics and gameplay for both are closer to PSP level than anything else I've played on my iPod Touch.

What boggles me is that some folks consider 8 bucks to be too expensive for this game. How can anyone expect developers to keep working to produce very high quality titles when people aren't willing to pay a decent price for them? Even if you only get a couple hours of fun out of the game – you're still getting more entertainment for the money compared to say, going for a movie.

    • Candy says:

I agree. $8 is lunch money with a drink.

I use the touch controls advanced and have no problems. PSP quality amazing graphics. Super fun game. It's gonna stay on my ipod touch for a long long time.

  • Tower Defender says:

Just bought it and it is awesome! Good controls and graphics and I'm usually horrible with tilt controls.

  • Jayminer says:

I think the controls are too unresponsive even if I turn the sensitivity to the max and the dead zone to zero. I don't know if there is something I'm doing wrong, how I tilt the device? I like how the game looks and feels and if I could just make friends with the steering, I would definitely say this is worth $8.

    • NotYou says:

I actually think the controls are great. If anything, they're too sensitive.

How are you trying to steer?

  • Digital Accent says:

I have been playing this on an iPhone 3G and just tried it on an iPod touch 2G. There are some notable differences:

    1) On the iPhone, you race against two opponents; on the iPod against 4, for a total of five (that gets hairy).
    2) There are more details on the tracks (bulldozers on the practice track, for example) on the iPod, but none on the iPhone.

The devs have obviously done some scaling for the slower processor and less RAM on the iPhone. Both devices were on the default game settings, so I don't think it's possible to race against more opponents on the iPhone, unless I am missing something. Someone correct me please if I am wrong.

It's way more fun on the iPod with five bikes.

  • Don't even go near buying this stupid game! Once you start playing it it feels really bad! Bad physics and the overall 'complete' feel is missing. I expected so much to get a Motocross Madness clone and I'm now left with a piece of stupid gameplay. For $7.99, the game is crap!

  • Marat says:

The game has great reviews on the App Store, now all it needs is a price drop and i am in for one.
    $7.99 is a lot for a iPod Touch/iPhone game.

  • Maxchen says:

Yes, i like it since 2007..
    looks nice!
