ghostbusters screenFans of the 1984 Ghostbusters franchise have a spectral package of campy '80s goodness floating their way.  As Electricpig reports, Sony Pictures Television has just announced an iPhone version of the upcoming X360 / PS3 / Wii game of Ghostbusters.  Despite its spotty past, the game is set to arrive in mid-June and will be a shade more picturesque than the '80s Activision Apple II original.

And to fans of the the 8-bit original: you're old.  And so are we.  It's been 25 years--God help us.  But we're in this together, so let's just make the best of it.

Featuring a storyline written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, the '09 release of the game Ghostbusters will effectively be Ghostbusters III, says Aykroyd.  Most of the movie's actors have signed on for voice roles, with the notable exception of Rick Moranis, who has retired from acting.

Sony says the Ghostbusters iPhone game will see you playing as the traditional team from the Ghostbusters movies, tackling New York borough by borough, trapping pesky poltergeists and stopping innocent citizens from being slimed. Think Halloween Harry, only with Ghostbusters’ Peter Venkman deadpanning it all the way through.

At present, details are scant.  There's no indication of the nature of the game's controls or any indication of price point.  But, stay tuned--we'll bring more details as they surface and take a frighteningly close look when the game hits the App Store.  (After all, I ain't 'fraid of no ghost...)

Give us a 3rd Person (with optional 1st Person) game like Dexter... go on, you know it makes sense!

Please make sure it's 3rd person with selectable angle.

I loved the Commodore 64 game. Clearly this is something more sophisticated though.

How could anyone be a fan of the Apple II Ghostbusters? It was a crapfest and fell under the category of the ET failure.

Sony has also announced that a James Bond game where you face off against certain Bond villains. Apparently it will also have multiplayer connectivity; http://uk.wireless.ign.com/articles/967/967612p1.html

I remember playing the Sega Master System version of the game. Was pretty good. Don't know if it was anything like the Apple II version though.

Hopefully this one is good. If the actors are involved, particularly Ramis on the writing end, then it might actually be pretty good.

Ghostbusters, the original 8-bit game, would make an awesome port to the iPhone. The controls were basic ..I can imagine good ways to map most of them to the phone already. A graphical make-over is all it needs. (Though, personally, I'm not too worried if it didn't even get that.)

Sounds like this will be a whole new title. Shame. Heck, it would be great marketing to start off with a port of the original game to create buzz for the new Ghostbusters game. (Probably the ones in marketing right now are too young to even know of the old game) :p

I worked on the Ghostbusters Mobile and iPhone game for Vivendi before we folded and sold all the rights back to Sony, we delivered them all of our work before we left. If they are using the same work we did, prepare to be underwhelmed as we just reskin and updated a former game called Magnetic Joe. Lets hope Sony went to town and built their own game for this.

    • nicholascott

I seriously doubt you worked for Vivendi. Magnetic joe was an addictive puzzle type game. I don't see how they could build off that type of game and repackage that as ghostbusters.
