The iPhone 3.0 Media Event is has generated a lot of interesting announcements and remains ongoing. A few highlights for iPhone gamers:

  • iPhone 3.0: 1000 new APIs. New In-App purchases with support for Subscriptions, Additional Levels (ex. games), New Content (ex. ebooks)
  • In-App purchases also use iTunes accounts. 70% to developer. 30% to Apple. Restricted to paid apps only. Free apps remain free.
  • Peer-to-Peer connectivity. Automatic discovery over bluetooth. good for games and other apps. (send business cards, playing backgammon)
  • SDK support for hardware accessories via dock. Examples: FM Transmitter with radio app to tune. Also Blood Pressure cuff with app.
  • A slide shows lots of new APIs: "in game voice", "in app email", "proximity sensor", "iPod library access", "text selection".
  • EA The Sims with in-game items for $0.99 each. Playing in-game stereo plays music from your library.

We'll provide more comprehensive coverage after the event is complete. Live coverage can be found at Gizmodo.

  • Aidan says:

ingame PURCHASES!!! 99cents for sims stuff??? fricking rip-off!!!

  • Tastic says:

Boo on nickel-and-diming us to death. It makes sense to have a charge for additional content that comes out later, but if you want more cash for something already there, charge more up front!

  • SalsaMD says:

I have to agree. Who is going to pay $0.99 for virtual content? ebooks I can understand, but virtual content within the Sims? Is this how virtual consumption is managed/charged on the PC version of the game?

  • Aidan says:

and the worst thing is that i will probably buy all of it! LOL

  • Frand says:

In-game purchases are a good thing. It allows developers to lower the cost of entry while allowing the interested users to buy in what they want to.

Charging more up front doesn't work well in the iTunes marketplace, anyone can check the top 10 of US App Store to realize that.

My favorite first person shooters involve mechanics similar to Q3A. Specifically the Rocket Arena mod. Players start with everything and matches are won based on skill, not on imposed disadvantages such as bonuses or upgrades. This is why I can't get behind buying a rocket launcher in-game for real money. I can understand doing character customization in this way, but when it affects the game mechanics it just seems wrong to me.

  • Danny Doggy says:

    DLC is wrong.

  • Garden Dwarf says:

And no GPS software ? Booohoooooohooooooo :'(

  • BeyondtheTech says:

GPS software is allowed, just no use of Google Maps data due to licensing.

  • Goodgame says:

Looks like icontrol pad did alot of hard work that is now obsolete. Thanks to Bluetooth and 30 pin accessiory communication. And the competiton is goig to be so much steeper.

  • Wmc says:

    Yes bluetooth and Sims!!!

  • mattmanp says:

I think the availability of charged DLC updates could be good for the store because it may help cut down on clutter (IE bundling books under fewer apps or making a paid expansion as opposed to a sequel).

  • Aaron Sullivan says:

Calling out to control pad developers! PLEASE, Please, please get together a decent API standard YOURSELVES and make your stuff compliant with each other. It's the only way to get wide support going. If that could happen quickly, I'd be adding it to my game RIGHT NOW.

Thank you for listening, and sorry for the yelling.

Also, this update is way beyond my expectations.

  • JCat says:

LOL – yeah, can't wait to not purchase sims furniture, or the game for that matter.

Now the ngmoco game on the other hand, looks quite interesting!

  • 8bitgeorge says:

Hm.. rocket launcher for $.99? Not a good idea. We all know rocket launchers are necessary.

On the other hand, optional apparel for the Sims? Much better idea.

Altogether, I see a future where we're invaded by DLC. Sad.

  • Garden Dwarf says:

Yes, GPS software is allowed but Apple has initiated something like TomTom and co … news found on the internet some weeks ago !

  • Tastic says:

Developers abuse DLC. That's the problem. They forget the DL part of it. It's lame to pay for content that is clearly already there.

Don't give me that cost of entry BS. It's a lie to get more suckers to buy crippleware. People complain about prices and that will never go away. In fact, this will make it WORSE.

  • benjamin says:

    @Tastic
i personally agree with you,a game like the sims should cost like 20$ max
and no bull crap with in game items.i mean,c'om on people a game is a game
and there charging way to much for them already.the iphone nor the ipod touch are "gaming" "machines",and the battery dies verry quikely when playing high-end 3D graphics games.after 1h-1,5h the battery is dead and then you need to reload.and they still didn't releaese need for speed under cover so i'm not going to to buy new stuff till they finally do that.

  • Jay says:

No change to the 9 page app limit? I know I can always delete apps when my 9 pages are full but that is an inconvenient PITA. Having to be more selective as to which apps to purchase is hurting developers in the long run, as I have slowed waaay down on my app purchases and I suspect I am not the only one.

  • lego4jesse says:

wat does dlc stand for btw?
yes i really HATE the idea of this new ingame app purchasing. apple does anything to make more money these days. and now that they cant give this to free apps, free apps will now charge money just to charge even MORE

welcome to the new app store!
    buy game for 99cents
oops u dont have a character
    buy one here!
