Late last month we previewed Gameloft's Let's Golf and were impressed with what we saw.  This afternoon, this highly anticipated golfing game was released in the App Store [link].

Since then, I've had the pleasure of playing through a few rounds of both single player and multiplayer. As a huge fan of the Hot Shots Golf series, I'm overjoyed to be able to say that the gameplay of Let's Golf is remarkably similar, the controls are awesome, and from a graphical standpoint, Let's Golf gives the Sony PSP's Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee a run for its money.

Available play modes are Instant Play, which throws you into a random series of three holes, Tournament, which allows you to compete for unlockable additions to your character such as different clothes and golf balls, and Free Hole, which allows you to practice a course by yourself. In addition to the three single player modes, both WiFi and single-device multiplayer allow you to challenge friends to golf battles regardless of whether or not they have an iPhone or own the game!

Controls are similar to the rest of the golfing genre--Let's Golf features the standard single-button power and accuracy swing method as well as an "advanced" mode, where you drag your finger on screen to swing your club. Standard controls provide guidance, based on where you aim your shot on the map. In advanced mode, you're on your own. Spin can be put on the ball by dragging the on-screen ball in whatever direction you want it to spin after the shot is in the air--not highly realistic, but with the limited input methods, an understandable compromise.

Early gameplay video:

My first impressions of Let's Golf's performance are been positive. Frame rates are solid with only minor drops when the camera zooms out. Multiplayer works flawlessly, and the WiFi mode even includes a lobby system to organize local games. So far, I'm impressed with Gameloft's efforts in producing a golf game that effectively duplicates everything I love about Hot Shots Golf. Needless to say, fans of the series will feel right at home.

Keep an eye out for our in-depth review of Let's Golf.

Well, this is Wii Sports Golf on my iPhone. ;-)
I played a few minutes and I'm happy with the game. Unfortunately the Wifi-Multiplayer is only local. It would have been great playing against people from all over the world.

I've waited for this game since the first screen-shots. I'm not disappointed. It plays just like Hot-Shots Golf and looks better too.Worth every penny @$5.99. Not too concerned about Wi-Fi being local or world-wide,although playing against someone across the globe would be a great addition.

I'm sure you could still play remote multiplayer games over a VPN connection.

When is Golden Tee coming out for the iPhone? The "rolling ball" swing method makes PERFECT sense on a touch screen!

MAN!! I've been awaiting this game for so dang long ... now its out and downloaded, and my iPhone had to be sent to Apple for repair today (people couldn't hear me during calls), so I don't get to play it for 2 bloody weeks!! GRRRRRRRRR!!

Glad I have the game, though.

    @Adam:

Sad to hear that. My display is cracked bottom left corner, but it doesn't bother me as my view is still good. I'll send it to Apple when I think the crack is getting larger.
But I had to send my Wii to Nintendo these days (it didn't play discs anymore), that's why I'm happy I can play Let's Golf on the iPhone. ;-)

I'm really happy with Lets Golf!

    Nice article Eli. (Eli?)...hmm.

The one thing I hope I'm overlooking, I cannot find the projected yardage of my clubs!? I find it hard to be really accurate a/o this. I know with the three click method it tells you how many % to aim for, but the better touch swing method(nice, very nice) I need to know how many yards a particular club is projected to hit. Like I said maybe I'm overlooking this, I hope so, but if it's just not there, that just ruins the touch swinging for me.

Btw, I have liked all the Hot Shots games, and yes this gives them a serious run for their worth, but one thing that gives Lets Golf! An edge over Hot Shots, to me, is LG is less "kiddie"! Hopefully someone can shed some light on my club dillema.

I don't get how the game is tracking your cumulative stats. Can you unlock higher levels with wins? How do you track that?

LOL, nevermind my "club yardage problem". In the upper right the gauge shows estimated "power" and it works accurately. I'd still prefer knowing the #'s, but at least now when putting, I don't way overshoot:D

Asked before but no answer: can someone please tell me if you can play the game with your own music? And does it let you keep the sfx like Rolando, Fastlane and Drop7 do?

i have purchased my fair share of games for the iphone, including most of the higher end titles. most of these have failed to maintain my interest for much more than a day...until Let's Golf. This is IMHO easily the best game available for the iphone. Of course this is very much based on the types of game I like to play, but it is highly polished, challenging, and fun to play.

The only criticisms I have are not being able to turn off the character's audio. It gets rather annoying to have to listen to "Great Shot" or "Lets do this" (or whatever it is) etc hole after hole. I have the music turned off so it really stands out and gets old fast. Hopefully in a future update they will allow this feature to be turned off/down along with the game music.

question to those who own this: when you're in the middle of a hole and you either (a) get a call or (b) have to quit for any other reason by hitting the home button, is your progress saved? in Par 72, you're reset to the beginning of the current hole, which isn't that bad (specially if you landed in the drink!).
