BulkyPix has been hyping up their upcoming adventure game Hysteria Project with a series of teasers, and has just released the first gameplay video. The game begins with the following premise:

You start in an old cabane after been tied by a strange and frightening guy...
Your eyes are blurred, you feel your heart pulsing on forehead sides.
You see this strange logo everywhere around you and start to hear weird cries.
There is only one thing to do.. escape and stay alive!

The developers describe the game as a "groundbreaking gaming experience" with an interactive series of video clips.

Go along with the video clips, keep a sharp eye on what's going on around you and most importantly of all - make the right choices at the right time.

The game plays like a choose-your-own-adventure book set to video. This video shows the initial decisions to be made:

The initial "pilot" episode should be available in the coming weeks and offer 30-40 minutes of play for $1.99. Subsequent episodes will continue to reveal a longer running story.

    Very cool concept. I'm interested for sure! Wondering how quality will look, seeing as how it's going to be fairly cheap ($1.99) I'm not expecting a Hollywood Blockbuster, but i hope the rest of the game looks as polished as that trailer, if so this will be an instant buy for me!

    I was wondering, just what happens if you don't touch the 'hand" icon at the right time to movre tree branches?

    @alexandre

    I was wondering the same thing. I guess the "clip" would either stop/pause until you git the "hand" icon. Can't move forward without clearing the branches.

    Also, this is the second interactive movie adventure game released for iTouch/Phone. If the preview of this game interests you then I suggest trying out the currently available interactive movie adventure for iTouch/Phone called Alternate Endings. It's pretty damned good, and got good reviews. And if stuff like this takes off on this platform (however slightly), maybe this old film student will go that route if and when I ever sink into making an iTouch/Phone game ;)

    Hah!! When I first read the headline, just for a moment, I thought it was a commentary about the ZEN BOUND Forum!! :)

    This game looks pretty neat, I seem to remember a "choose your own path" game already on the appstore about a security guard or something that played a bit like an interactive movie - something like 'Alternate Endings' can't remember the exact name - any help?

    @spiffyone.

    While I do like this game concept. I was not that impressed with A.E. wrt the storyline, acting, and smoothness of the transitions along the decision trees. This does at least appear more interactive and engaging with the soundtrack. Soul Trapper is also along a similar vein: interactive, but largely audio. If this provides engaging/interactive video and an immersive soundtrack, then I think it will be the best of the bunch.

    I already watch NON-interactive TV on my iPhone... may as well have some choice in the matter :)

    The price is right, and like regular TV/movies, I can simply remove them from my phone until I'm ready to view/play again, so the space taken up need not be permanent.

    @Kia,

    Before we start along that questionable relevant path, perhaps we might give attention to the game itself first? Also, is the developer a native English speaker?

    Interesting concept, but I am unsure of whether this has been implemented well. The acting isn't very good and the whole thing itself seems pretty cliched.

    Eh...I dug Alternate Endings. The acting, script, etc. were cheesy, IMHO, because...well...that's how it was meant to be. Not to be taken seriously or anything. It did it's job and did it fairly well. Could the branching paths have been richer? Sure. But for an early effort at the subgenre it was fantastic, IMHO.

    And kudos for mentioning Soul Trapper. Very underappreciated game. I think the higher price along with the genre is what has kept it off the top 100 game apps listings but Realtime Associates has gotten enough returns I gather to go ahead with the follow ups to Soul Trapper, as well as the other audio adventures they have cooking (L.A. Knight and Bloodvine).

    And this platform is tailor made for adventure games of all sorts. I hope devs continue to bring them to the platform, and I also hope they continue to sell well enough so devs have a reason to put in the effort.

    Alternate ending was very cool, not much interaction of even anthing to do but trying to watch all the branches, but considering the price point it was an exellent experience overall

    Soul trapper, was a fine game as well, but I think it's really too "niche" to work well for the mass audience... they were almost no graphics in the game and very interaction as well, most players are lazy as hell nowaday...
    (The sounds and voice acting were top notch on this one, but imho it's not enough to make a game appealing for most...)

    On this one there seems to be more interactivity and stuff to do, well i'm not a native speaker so I don't really mind if the english is a little off:)
    I'll get it when it comes out, any real effort into making original games must be awarded;)

    The title of the current Interactive Movie on iTunes is called, "Alternate Endings." I haven't played a lot of it yet, but it does remind me a lot of an interactive movie I purchased when DVD was new and originally came out on laser disc called, "I'm Your Man."

    I absolutely loved the interactive movie games that came out on the Sega CD. I honestly believed that was the wave of the future when I was a teenager. Games I played and enjoyed on there were Sewer Shark, Double Switch, Ground Zero Texas, Night Trap and Wirehead just to name a few. I do realize that there really isn't a lot of game play to them, but I do enjoy that type of experience.

    I am excited for Hysteria, but after watching the three minute video.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owjPe...ws.asp?c=11723

    It feels a lot like, "Quick Time Events" that you find in games like Shenmue, God of War and the upcoming Heavy Rain.

    The problem with an entire interactive movie game like that will be if you miss one or two on screen button presses, you will fail get one of two different outcome scenes and possibly have to replay the same scene again until you get it right. Something that happened often in the Sega CD era.

    Hopefully I am wrong. I am still very much looking forward to this game and the potential it holds.

    As a big Sega CD fan, I'm really looking forward to this game! While a cool concept, the Sega CD had low quality video and awkward pauses between scene changes. This game is the same concept, but with much better execution.

    What I'd really love to see is an official "Saw" game for the iPod with this gameplay. Hate on the movies if you'd like, but you have to agree that this would make a great Saw game.

    Two things are worth noting about Alternate Endings that make it a superior offering in the field of interactive movies:

    1. The narrative pathways created are all fairly tight from a story structure perspective. Every little piece of each scene pays off in later scenes. Example: the security guard is watching an old detective movie--not only does this set up the security guard as a wannabe cop, but later on the security guard faces the same choice as the tv detective did.

    2. You can jump back to any of your decision point after the movie finishes with the menu provided that tells you what you did. You can, but need not, go back through the entire movie. You can selectively choose which decision point to change, and proceed from there. This also illustrates that each decision point sends you down a different narrative path, none of which are dead ends.

    My $0.02.

    Hope to see more of these types of projects.

    this is good but i don't think alternate ways thru a story really compel me as a viewer - did anyone see the Crimeface interactive movie? it does something smilar but you never really leave the story... that's my £0.02
