Edge has arrived [App Store].

The $5.99 platformer certainly looks very impressive. The developers describe it as an original game dedicated to mobile only. It comes with 26 levels with "simple and addictive gameplay for everyone."

Edge puts the player in control of a colorful cube that moves about a series of 3D, isometric maze environments (26 in all) full of puzzles to solve and hazards to avoid.

Edge won the Milthon award for Best Mobile Game of 2008 at the Festival du Jeu Video, Paris and is nominated for the Excellence in Gameplay award at the International Mobile Gaming Award competition. Some early opinions have been posted in our forums.

Be sure to check out the gameplay video.

i bought it and it is worth it. it kind of has the echochrome feel in my opinion. feels like an interactive art piece as much as a game. some may not like it's minimalism and others will love it.
t: you control the cube by tilting the phone(accelerometer), and the controls feels great. you have the option to drag your finger but the tilting feels more intuitive. you can even balance the cube on an edge. amazingly it feels right.

the default controls are swipe/hold to make the cube move in that direction. tilt/accel also an option as described above.

I just got it from the New Zealand App Store. It is a really great game, one of the best. Controls are very precise - I always feel if I fall off the edge it's my fault. Only 25+1 levels though, so I think many people will feel it's too short. Maybe there will be an update, but until then it is the kind of game where beating your previous time seems worthwhile. .

I just bought it and played a couple of levels. It feels good and exactly the type of puzzle I like. Great! The accelerometer controls feel a bit "easier" that swiping with finger
As for the appstore, it doesn't show here (sweden) either if I do a search, but luckily there was that direct link above for the store. I think something should be done with that store....

Brilliant brilliant brilliant game! (Yeah, I couldn't find it in the NZ store either, using search. The direct link in the news item above worked though.

Joni: Have you *played* it? Heck, just from a look of the video it looked like a good game. I bought it right after seeing the video, thought I'd give it a quick try-out (even though it's already 1:30am and I have work this morning) and I was still playing it half an hour later. This is (quite seriously) the best game I've bought in the six months I've owned the phone ..and I have 314 Apps overall ..many paid for.)

The gameplay is brilliant, and the sound design .. wow. Amazing. (Try it with headphones.) Someone mentioned Marble Madness, this feels to me somehow like Spindizzy. And the music is like an orchestra of SID-chips (6581) for anyone who ever had a c64. ..Love this game.

I'm so sick of controlling a freakin' ball or a stupid cube! If this game is so good, why is the character a freakin' cube? The deves can't even come up with a real character? Ridiculous. No way I would get this for $5.99.

I bought it even after reading some negative troll reviews regarding price and content. Plays like a dream great visuals and audio. This is highly recommended and while not as long as Rolando very bit as good.

Can you hold the iPod vertically (i.e. facing you) and do the tilting, or do you have to lay it on your lap (i.e. facing the sky)?

I hate tilting game that require the latter (like Katamari) as it's easier for me to play sitting down and leaning back. That's the drawback of tilt games, they force a playing posture.

I was quite confused reading the comments on the forum, but I bought it anyway and I don't regret it !
You can feel the passion of the devs behind this title (even if I really dislike the controls with the accelerometer).
(The only downside are those "question marks tutorials" avoid them !)
Reminds me of those games where it feels so right it s a bless to immerse yourself into.
Polished with a soul, must buy for me !

I've not tried the accelerometer option yet, but I'm liking this title anyway just on the touch control system. It's one to rival Rolando - Seriously. Environments are simple yet complex, the game is responsive and doesn't crash! £3.50 well spent.

To larrybeo: Sorry you don't get the coolness of the minimalism of this game. I hope you've pimped your iPhone out with covers and needless fake buttons so you feel that's cool too. ..The whole cube thing works great, and is integral to the feel of the game, coz it does step around the field ..you get to do little balancing 'wheelies' too. Great the way they've done that.

To steve: by default the accelerometer is off, so it's touch (and kind of dragging, which works real well) to move. Great at any angle. Also rotating the screen is done with manual rotate gestures too, so you can play it lying on your side. Perfect. (I hate accelerometer-based rotation.. most of the time it's triggered when I don't want it. Apple, let me turn it off! I'd rather control the photo's app this way.)

Currently the tilt-controls are IMHO lame.. it's flat, not 45 or 30 degrees like most (sensible games) ..I didn't notice any calibration options, certainly there's no auto-calibration. The game needs finer controls though, so I'm sticking with the default touch controls.

The levels may be short and I agree that more could of been made because of their simple nautre there is still a lot to the game like the level rankings and prisms (Shame a lot arent placed cleverly). Plus with the amount of audio and polish, 26 levels is good for the price :P

I'd prefer to see a "proper" gameplay video of this, made by an un-biased 3rd-party, with fingers-on-screen and all, rather than some screen-captured cut-together "highlights" promotional video made by the developers themselves.

It's all very well presented and generally everything works well apart from moving your cube over a gap, watching the question mark, then trying countless (and I mean sometimes silly amounts) attempts at trying to tilt your cube just right so it sticks to the sliding crossing cubes thus hopefully carrying your cube over a gap. Because the fact of the matter is, if you only had 5 lives, completing the game would be impossible. I find this a major flaw, big letdown & very frustrating to the point it ruined an otherwise great game.

Scott, I believe "edging" or balancing on one edge, is a skill that the game encourages the player to develop. Witness the in-game timer and the record of the player's total "edge" time in the scoring screen after a level is completed...

Practicing your tilting is one thing but having full control of your cube is another...the game is flawed for this very reason where luck is often the factor rather than it being control hence your cube having infinite lives.

In regards to tilting the cube to hang onto an edge, you ALWAYS need to use the touch controls, applying little dabs of movement to get it across. This works perfectly fine once you get the hang of it.

Just finished the game and in my view it was a top tier title on the platform. Everything you read here is true to some extent - design and sound are excellent, control is very good but at times frustrating (until you really nail the technique for hanging), it could be considered too short BUT the enjoyment I had while playing the game, the tension and sense of satisfaction when making it through a challenging level, all combine to a positive result. And the fact that I actually completed the game is a testament to how enjoyable it was since I have yet to "complete" an iPhone game due to the inevitable sense of boredom I get.

I don't usually reply to any conversations here but now I feel it's needed. Before buying I also read all the comments here and I was not sure, but now I know this was one of the best buys so far!

The game is not short at all. You have 26 levels, but believe me you won't finish them at 100% the first time and the score for the time won't be nice as well. Fortunately this game is so enjoyable you will be trying to improve your 'score' over and over. Would be nice to get online scoreboard in the update tho. The levels get quite hard as you approach the last one.

For me the swipe control is much better than tilt. You can lie in bed and play without problems. My longest 'edge' time is above 5 sec, try that on accelerometer controls! :)

You can also rotate the screen (with two fingers) so there is no problem playing landscape, which suits me better.

Game is very polished but still missing few bit and pieces to be perfect :) Like not being able to jump directly to main menu after finishing level, or not seeing how much you differ from your previous time on the actual level.

This game is definitely in top 5 on current iPhone game list. What a shame crap like iFart takes place for amazing games like Edge.
