To celebrate the December 18th release date of Rolando, Ngmoco is having a sale of all of their existing games:

While all of Ngmoco's games are highly polished and well worth their respective prices, we had a particular fondness for Dropship (review) and highly recommend it as the best shooter on the iPhone.

Rolando will be released on December 18th. Video and features are listed at http://rolando.ngmoco.com/.

As much as i love discounting ... the reduction of their latest games by 50% less than a week after release is kinda undermining my desire to buy day-1 titles ... seems like its always best waiting a week or so ... stop punishing early adopters!

I've paid $5 for games that have dropped down to $0.99 not long after I've made the purchase.

It's a dollar, get over it.

I used AppSniper to monitor decent apps for any price drops.... and it pointed these two out for me! Snapped them up at a dollar each. Definitely worth it, if only to save you ripping hair off your head

The money really isn't the issue, it's about making your initial puchase customers feel they've bought something worth it. If you buy an app at 9.99
You think thats what it cost after everything in it pluse revenue, then to see it drop 50% your left asking yourself what was it that cost so much that doesn't now.....& the only reason they can drop the price is cause all of the initial price sales anyway.

Somehow the fun of any technolagy is taken away when you've felt you've been taken for any amount, however if a certain number of days, weeks or months go by intial purchasers aren't snubbebed by price drops or gig sizes
going up in six months.....which apple is known for and I think prides itself on.
Best thing to do is note these behaviors and hold off. if you can and if not......well you can't be mad because you put your hand on a stove you knew was hot.

So I wonder...should I buy Rolando on day one? or should I wait for a price drop?

This is just reinforcing the concerns of other developers. Those games were well worth the initial price. If anything...they should have been priced higher.

I have bought every ngmoco game on day one because I figured there was no way they would be cheaper anytime soon...guess I was wrong.

Redstar is right...it's not about the money...it's about not feeling like you have been "taken". Even though it's only $3 (if you're like me and have bought all 3)...well with the state of the economy these days...$3 means a little more to everyone then it once did.

Yeah, I'm not sure this is the best strategy. They take half price off their games right before introducing their most expensive game? Assuming that Rolando debuts at $9.99, I expect the normal early adopters (who read websites like this) will be very tempted to wait for the $4.99 price.

These price drops have yet to hit the uk topple is not free :( although it is £.59 and mazefinger is free :)

Ngmoco is still one of the most consistent games company producing games for the iPod/iPhone keep up the good work.

Also a big thanks to toucharcade for being the best website for news on games.

I have bought every ngmoco title in the first week and I really don't mind that I paid a whole $3 more for all the apps here. They're great games it was worth it to play them earlier. Though I wish that ngmoco would think of something nice to do for all us loyal customers that already have all their games. How about release more great games? Rolando? Or maybe give out free hugs? That would be nice too.

"then to see it drop 50% your left asking yourself what was it that cost so much that doesn’t now….."

It's simply a sale. Products go on sale all the time. Every time you go to the grocery store something different is on sale. It's an incentive to get you into the store, draw attention to other products, etc. It's not a mysterious process :-p

The amount you--and I--failed to save by missing this sale is... one dollar.

I'm tormented, but life goes on ;-D

If I wasn't sure the game was worth $2 to me then I shouldn't have bought it. I'd be happy to have waited and paid only $1, but it WAS worth $2--or more--to me. We are talking tiny amounts of money compared to what I throw away on things I don't need to have/eat every week.

Actually, I noticed it was only NZ$1.29 on the NZ store last night (but only on the search page, not on the actual dropship page).

    @Nagromme:
how is buying at full price and seeing it drop in a week an insentive?
I understand putting things on sale but if you already have it how do you take advantage of the sale?

A grocery store and the app store are to different chains of marketing to the point of incomparison

You can't return an app, or get a refund, or even buy it back after a refund.

I truly see your point however in this instance it's totally misplaced.

I think we're talking about all apps not just the cheaper ones that do this far to often.
Of course when I bought a mac air I knew the next summer the gig size would go up, but thats a year versus a week. Not saying apps should take a year but they should know that a week isn't a fair amount of time for initial purchasers to not feel bad about not waiting that week when they didn't know anything about the drop.
You think we all said "oh it's dropping in a week but I don't care I need it now"

Maybe to please everybody Apple should impose some sort of time restriction so that you can only drop your app price after a few months and then only by a certain percentage. This would also encourage developers to create demo versions, maybe just one level or summat.

I'm all for the cheap apps, but it is upsetting when you pay for one only to have it drop to virtually nothing a week later.

Still, I've taken up the offer of Dr. Awesome, Topple and Dropship. Dr Awesome is becoming a bit Dr.Boring for my liking. Dropship is cool, like a new-school Thrust and Topple is just soooo frustrating that it makes me want to throw my phone through the window. I keeps coming back though!

Just played them both for abit, and I love Dropship. Real retro feel with modern graphics, its really good! Dr Awesome is more like a free-form update of Bix on iPhone and even older game called Qix on the venerable Atari. Still nice but not as brilliant as dropship.

As for the sales strategy, developers risk their apps dropping off the top50 radar if they don't have regular sales and strong reviews to bump them back in. Once in top50, then there becomes a steady stream of buyers. More and more apps are being released, and its getting harder to stay in the top50. How often does anyone casually browse the App Store beyond the top50? 10,000apps and only the top50 get noticed.

There needs to be a better way of browsing apps on the App Store and iTunes in general in order to negate this Sale-after-afew-days tactic.

I lost $2 too, but I don't really care. If I wanted to save money I could easily use cracked copies. I bought the games because I thought they are worth the money - and they were. I also buy apps to support the developers and NGmoco is a company worth supporting. After all we get our iPhone games very cheap. Games like Dropship could easily be sold for $5, if the AppStore wasn't the way it is.

Of course early price drops like these let me think about buying games for $5 or $10. I don't mind "wasting" $1 (or $5-$10/month all apps combined), but I would care about losing $4-$9 for a single app within a few days or weeks.
