Mobile developer Spiffcode has recently released an iPhone version of their highly rated, mobile real time strategy game Warfare Incorporated [App Store] through the App Store.  Warfare Incorporated makes its debut at a limited time introductory price of $4.99.

Spiffcode calls Warfare Incorporated, which was originally released in 2003, the best selling mobile real time strategy game of all time.  The game combines certain elements of both Command & Conquer and StarCraft and provides a fairly standard, overall RTS experience: setting up a base facility, mining for income, expanding operations with said income, defending against enemy forces, etc.

Readers responded quite positively to the iPhone version in our forums and the PalmOS and Pocket PC versions received rather high marks from various mobile review sitesPalmAddicts had this to say:

I have played a lot of games over the years, but nothing even comes close to the entertaining game play of Warfare, Incorporated. This game has definitely set the bar for RTS for the Palm OS and, dare I say, for all games in general.

Features listed by the developer:

  • Fully touch optimized for iPhone and iPod Touch
  • 22 unit and structure types
  • 20 story missions and 200+ add-on missions (and growing)
  • Full PC-based mission editor - create and publish your own missions
  • 2-4 player Multiplayer coming soon - now in BETA

Have a look at a a gameplay video that shows the first stages of a new game.  (Low res version here.)

I had this on my Palm Lifedrive and it was a great game, very comparable to PC RTS gaming (no lite functionality here, its the full thing). If this port is anything close, it will be grand.

Apple has really set a new pricing expectation in the marketplace.. this game was released in 2003 for the palm and winmo platforms and still lists for $19.99.. (doubtful that it really sells much anymore, but it's still available) and the user feedback is all 4-5 stars.

I just can't imagine anyone selling an appstore game title at $20, regardless of the quality, and not getting at least 50% of the community demanding a price drop.

It seems like at $5 this is a pretty good deal.

This is a great game. Or at least I remember it as a great game. I played through the whole thing on my palm pilot a years ago. Its too bad the graphics are the same quality though. It looks like they just too everything and enlarged it a bit but kept the resolution the same.

I love this game, never played the original. Had it for a few days, already up to mission 8.

I just wish the graphics were slightly better (higher resolution even), your troops were smarter when choosing their paths and that there were ways to set way-points for newly created troops to move to.

It took me a bit to realize that you can scroll down in the create menu to choose additional unit types to create...

I give it a 4/5. This just bumped Galcon as being my favorite iPhone game.

I played this game's demo on my old windows mobile phone a while ago. It was pretty sweet then, but it is so much better on the iPod. Plus you can make your own maps! And its only $4.99, I think it was $29.99 for windows mobile!

This game is freaking awesome. I bought it earlier this week, and I've already blown way too many hours on it, and still fiending for more. The implementation is quite good on this iPhone port.

If there are things they can improve upon, it would be the AI of your units. It would be nice if your units would stop going to their destination and defend themselves if they get attacked en-route, if defenseless units (like miners and dominions) could run away if attacked, and if your units could attack other in-range enemy buildings on their own once they're done attacking the one you told them to. Also, they might want to slightly decrease the size of the selection target on units, as when I try to send a unit near another unit, I too often end up selecting the other unit instead of marking the spot to move to, especially annoying when they're on opposite sides of the map.

Other than that, this game is extremely deep and well-implemented, and easily worth twice the asking price, making this purchase a no-brainer if you enjoy RTS games. The downloadable content in the form of additional missions makes the replay value on this game unbeatable.

This is Command and Conquer for the iphone. The story could use some tweaking, and maybe even some of the sprites. but very much the same as Command and Conquer. I don't even care there are no flying units. This game has stretched and challenged me in a way few iPhone games have. I LOVE THIS GAME!!

Great game! Been playing it for a week now, and love it!

@nr: although the Palm version cost $20 (and is still listed as such, apparently), the difference is that the iPhone version will sell at a MUCH higher volume, so they can afford to offer it at a lower price.

And I agree with the other commenters' sentiments- graphics upgrade would be perfect!

So how does this game handle, performance wise? I tend to turtle in RTS games and build up massive defense and pools of troops/units before I finally advance on the enemy.

With so many units on screen, when does it start to get sluggish?

    • C M

      "Get sluggish" ??

This game ran perfect on old Palm OS 5 handhelds (I still miss OS 5, kinda). An iPhone (or any new PDA/Smartphone/Toaster Oven)can run circles around that, while juggling, while wearing a blindfold, while riding a horse, while singing the American national anthem in Latin, while............

On a more serious note: This is the greatest PDA game that has ever been made and $5 is a steal for any game.

This game is amazing. I love it! I'm super excited, enjoying it a lot, and I can't wait to see the improvements they make.

This is the second game for iPhone that I've actually found myself preferring over many computer games. (First was Galcon, which reserved the #1 spot on my springboard, but now that place is reserved for WI!)

Greg, it performs perfectly! I have only had it lag at all once, and only for 2 seconds or so. I'm very impressed by performance.

I thoroughly love this game. I also agree with all of WiseWeasel's suggestions. Especially this one: when units are on the move, they should realize that they need to defend themselves once attacked, instead of moving right along until they reach their destination. Especially when I have to do more things at once. I shouldn't need to baby sit the units entirely while on the move. :)

I'd also like the ability to root units to a specific spot or area. I want units to defend a specific building, but if something comes along they travel forward bit by bit, until my building is un-protected.

I can't beat the Hostile Takeover level! I've tried 25 times at least! I've tried the take over power generators method, build lots of mobile units method, many other combination methods, and no go. Once I had about 30 mobile shooters, and tried to just take all of them toward the headquarters, but they all died on the way, since they can't travel and defend themselves at the same time. SIGH.

Not sure what I am missing but I've played this game for an hour now and its very boring - mine some rocks, make some money, mine some more, build a storage bunker, mine some more, make more money, expand the map mine some more build another bunker time for bed. Waste of money!

It's a good game and pretty easy to beat. I think making infantry is a waste of time lol. Make atleast 5 miners and 2 Refineries. Make 2 warfactories and in 1 build the T-33 Liberator (anti infantry) and in the other build the M-18 Hydra. Make atleast 5 of each and send them out and they will steam roll pretty much anything they have. Also build 3-4 artillery to take out their defense buildings before sending in your T-33s and M-18 but use those tanks to cover your artillery tanks. I have beat every mission without building a single infantry cept when i built an engineer for one of the missions. Also the missions where you are the main character you one shot infantry. Those are simple, just run back and shoot. You have a pretty long range. So shoot and scoot. Tip for last mission: You're going to need your artillery tank ( you only have 1 so don't lose it!) to take out the defense towers but take out the power plants when you see them to knock out their power and you don't have to worry about taking out any more buildings.
