Apple II 'Lemonade Stand' Remade for iPhone
posted October 28th, 2008 6:38 AM CDT by arn in Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch gamesGlenda Adams of Maverick Software let us know that they have been developing a remake of the classic Lemonade Stand game that came bundled with early Apple II series computers.
Adams reports that she tracked down the original game and was able to preserve the original gameplay and economics, but has given the graphics a needed update.
After tracking down the original game and running it on an emulator in its low-res 40×40 graphical glory, I decided it really needed a face lift. So while I kept the gameplay and economics (even using all the original game's simulation formulas), I had an artist make some great looking new screens for the weather forecasts and financial report, and did a custom iPhone slider interface to let you set your sales options.I digitized the original music from the Apple II game and its software synthesizer, since it is so recognizable to anyone who played the game before.
The game should be out later this week and priced at $0.99. It should be a kick for anyone who played the original. Screenshots are linked below:

Omg, i am so looking forward to this. I've loved lemonade tycoon all along, and i have it on my phone, but i quickly finished the game. I hope this has more depth, but at 0,99 i doubt it :\ STLL CAN'T WAIT TO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

@marcus: sounds like it is exactly the Apple II version, so not a huge amount of depth, but as I recall it was fun. $0.99 seems appropriate though.

Yea i suppose. Wonder why all these devs are making pre-released EA apps
First urban tycoon before simcity, now this before EA's Lemonade Tycoon. Anyway, graphics looks solid.

Oh my god… this is a definite BUY for me.

Ah crap - Updated Graphics.
it's like when they try to skin Nethack. It's never the same. Disregard my previous "definite buy" post.

If there is enough demand, I may put in a "classic" graphics option to show the original lowres art. When I played it under the emulator it was even more blocky than I remembered, so I just thought it would look too cheesy for the phone.

Wait, do you want the same graphics from the 80's? :O No offense, but they look kinda crappy. I'm all up for retro and stuff, but look at the first screenshot-super pixelated and like 4 colours :S
October 28th, 2008 at 9:19 am
lemonade costs 2 cents a glass, is this back in the 1980's economy?
October 28th, 2008 at 10:01 am
Marcus:
Yep - that's the point. It was written in LORES mode, which is only 39px across. For the game to be at all nostalgic, it would have to have an option to have the original graphics. The gameplay alone isn't compelling enough to bother with it.
So, no offense back, but this is how things were back then.

Glenda, if you put in a classic mode I will buy one for me and one for my dad. I like the idea of the updated graphics, but if you are shooting for nostalgia buys you absolutely must include the version that we loaded from a cassette tape.

I'll second John's vote. Keep the original Apple ][ font and it'll sell like hotcakes
Somebody really ought to get the rights to all the old Synergistic Software stuff like Microbe and put them on the iPhone
I'll even take Temple of Apshai or Gemstone Warrior!
October 28th, 2008 at 11:32 am
"Even" take Temple of Apshai and Gemstone Warrior? Those games ROCK!

If you add a old-graphics version I'd buy it too, just for the nostalgia. Thanks!

One more vote for original graphics. I haven't thought of the original game in years, but that screenshot brings back memories.
Honestly, though the new graphics are nice, they defeat the entire purpose of the app.

I don't know how necessarily the original graphics are. Original sounds and all, I think the feel will be there.

I think it looks awesome either way, burned a lotta computer lab time on this game when I was a kid

I think the graphics changed way too much. I would prefer the Lores version and a new version that is BASED on the same graphics but look better. It should be like Space Invasion - yes, it looks and plays like Space Invaders - but better. The new graphics does not looks like the old version.
Should use Apple II font but with lower case for the new graphics.
I am looking forward for other Apple II goodies like Taipan and Karateka.

I think I would pick this up with the classic graphics option. I guess I'm a purist at least when it comes to this. The option to have both seems like a good idea to me.
October 28th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I will also be buying it if you include the option of the original graphics!!!
October 28th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Actually, the text input of the game would be a nice option (but not a deal breaker). It would be great if I could do one of the two things I always did to this game:
1) Set negative values to mess with the logic.
2) Ctrl-C to break out of game and do a little tweaking. Applesoft games were always open-source like that.

For extra retro points, include the sound of tape loading (could you hear the tapes on the macs?)

This is supposed to be a retro gaming… not an emulator. Some of the requests are a little weird (iPhone game is not written in Applesoft!).

I just posted the 1.1 update, with full Apple II graphics! You can see a couple screenshots here: http://www.mavericksoftwaregames.com/Maverick_Software/Lemonade_Stand.html

Awesome!
I am extremely impressed by the retro graphics, even up to the point of showing an Apple II like dialog box! Personally I do hope that the text has lowercase though. There are also some extra spaces, maybe we can draw something that looks like Apple II…

In the old lemonade wasn't there a message like "You earned $2,40, but you could have earned $3.50 if you charged $0.14 and made 25 glasses of lemonade", showing you the perfect sales option for that day. That would be a nice option for an update maybe, and possibly some more variation in weather types/events?

+1 for Taipan. I'd write myself if I had the time and the source code.
