Very amusing defences from the dev. The game is laggy because the iphone isn’t powerful enough? Do me a lemon. I was playing ultima 1-8 on a 486 12 years ago, and i needed a program to LOWER the frame rates for the first 5 of the series. The fact that you can’t accept criticism is one thing, but creating obviously ridiculous excuses is quite another. You remind me of the guys on pop idol, insisting their ‘friends’ think they are amazing singers. Your game leaves a LOT to be desired, even as a free app. For the price it is, you really are having a laugh. Look at the quality of other apps for the same price, given your insistence on keeping the graphics very dated for nostalgia, you should at least have a game that is VERY smooth, very few loading times, with a much improved interface. That should be standard, before getting onto the actual gameplay/storyline.

Flame WAR! Geez guys, this is a very heated thread.
May I suggest that while Perilar mightn't be the best out there, it's definitely not the worst.
As an objective observer it seems Hughesy has copped a lot of unnecessary vitriol.
@Lord and Fat Phil: Why do the developer's personal views come into this at all? Surely he is entitled to his opinions on religion without being judged? The man is just stating his opinion, and I doubt that the fact he has published an app gives you a right to label him a 'horrible person' - especially as you're working under a pseudonym and he has no real chance to reply at the same level.
Cool it

I bought this app, played it, enjoyed it, and will buy the update.

I love old school rpgs, from the random char. creation to repetitive killing for leveling.

I thought this game used the iPhone features well and I look forward to more Ultima-style games (anything turn-based).

My main beef is the lack of explanation about the dungeons and no shop for armor. Also I died several times trying to press on my char. to heal myself, but moved onto an adjacent monster.

$5 is not too much to ask for a quality rpg that I can carry with me and is old school/turn-based. I thought this app of better value than many of my 20-30 downloads. You guys either didn't read before you bought, didn't buy, or are unable to appreciate carrying a Commodore 64 in your pocket.

Mark Damon Hughes: I appreciate the effort and I like the direction of your game. Please keep up the good work. As a neutral party, I would guess that some of negative comments above have secondary goals, sour grapes, or just don't like people doing what they wished they had thought of.

Just some advice, as I have not played the game. But $5 is a bit steep for this. Look at it this way:

10 people at $5 = $50 and 10 people to like/dislike the game and spread word of mouth

50 people at $1 = $50 and 50 people to like/dislike the game and spread word of mouth

Both seem similar, except consider this: A $30 steak that is mediocre will get poor reviews and word will spread rapidly. A $10 steak that is mediocre will still be OK because, hey - it was only $10 - what did you expect?

So in the second scenario you have 50 people, and maybe 25 of them like the game and another 5 think it is OK. That gives you 30 people who will spread a positive word. The other 20 people might not like it, but they won't be too upset because it was only $1. They might even say it was not very good but still worth $1. So you get mainly positive word-of-mouth and sales increase.

In the first scenario you have 10 people, maybe 5 people like it, and 1 who thinks it is OK. That leaves 4 people who dislike it. But now the 1 person might still complain because it was $5 and the other 4 are probably going to be pissed that they spent $5 and be very vocal against the game. So you get mostly negative word-of-mouth and sales lag.

Unless you know for sure that you have a blockbuster on your hands - a nice low price is a better deal for everyone.
