There are a number of “snake” or “nibbles” games for the iPhone , but a new such title headed to the App Store has a bit more polish than the rest.
NightIron has recently submitted its iPhone title Sleek to the App Store and it should be available for download in the next few days.
When we decided we would make an iPhone game, we had many ideas. But after a lot of discussions and debates, we had decided to start with something familiar to everyone, and build from there. We wanted our game to appeal to every iPhone owner even remotely interested in games, and a few of those who think they aren’t.
As the result, we present Sleek - the smoothest, most beautiful and playable snake game ever available on a phone.
Features as listed by developer:
- Familiar, time-proven gameplay: You’ll find your way around Sleek in less than a minute.
- Intuitive touch-based controls: Simply tap where you want the snake to turn, perform 180 degree turns with ease and more…
- Beautiful smooth animation: Sleek moves and turns smoothly.
- Atmospheric soundtrack: Easy to listen, deep-jungle rhythm.
- High-score table: Keep track of your scores and see how you improve over time.
See the developer’s demonstration video on the Sleek site.
Now available: Sleek, $1.99

Toucharcade reviewers have a knack for previewing games five minutes before they’re released.

Wow. Another snake game. Why would a developer feel there was a need for another one, “sleek” or not?

I agree, SteveJ. Talk about ‘playing it safe’. If these guys are as sleek and refined as they claim to be, I hope for a more audacious and creative effort for their next creation.

Developers remake old games because they sell. Look at the list of top 100 games. I’d estimate that there are fewer than 10 original games on that list - as in, games that nobody has ever seen before on another platform. Breaking in with a new name and new game concept is incredibly hard and, in most cases, does not make money in the short term. Everybody knows what Snake is, so Sleek starts out with a huge customer pool. It’s certainly not original, but it will probably sell.
