It certainly achieves its goal: you swing your arm, and depending on the speed and angle (via accelerometer), the ball goes accordingly. After swinging, you can influence the ball by tilting the device. And if you don't want to throw your iPhone, just use a downward "chopping" motion instead of an upwards "swinging to the ceiling" motion - that keeps the device more in your hands, thanks to gravity. What they need to do is have you slide your finger from "Bowl" to some other ("Release"?) button, rather than actually lifting your finger off the device - that's where you're no longer holding on very much, and the trouble starts!
