@ Chris: that has happened to me 40 times since July 11th, on three devices. It is NOT a hardware issue. It is a software issue that has been discussed in the media (ZDNet, Chicago Tribune) and that I've submitted TWICE to MacRumors (but for whatever reason, arn seems to not want to post it.

I digress – the solution is posted above. Ironically, the only way to fix the problem is to gain access to the iPhone's filesystem – in other words, jailbreaking.

With the 2.0.1 release my ipod touch started hanging and then once shut down not coming up. I sent it in under warranty. They sent back a new touch.

Today I did the 2.0.2 update and AGAIN it hung and refused to boot back up (comes up to the mac logo and stops)

I've never jailbroken, it hasn't been dropped or harmed in any way.

They charge $29.95 s&h for "free" warranty service…and the "new" touch does the same thing.

I just don't get it. Is their hardware crap?

I'm really of the opinion that it's all tied to the 2.0 software update and clearly 2.0.2 isn't any better.

What kills me is that rebuilding it takes F O R E V E R (and then a day) and mine is only an 8gb model.

every time I try to download a new software it takes at least three hours and at least three tries because somebody in my family will close it or mess it up somehow, apple could male a large improvement by making this process quick and painless.

Howzabout they actually fix the music/video playcount increase bug that has been present since firmware 1.0 and STILL hasn't been fixed!? Sheesh…
All the glitzy glamorous 2.0 features aside, most of my Smart Playlists rely on "last played" or "play count" and suchlike, and if the iPhone doesn't register what's been played when it syncs with iTunes, then none of my Smart Playlists get updated!
Not very smart then…

I hate to rain on the parade, but there are reports on Apple's Support Forums that the ALoD (Apple Logo of Death) still occurs with 2.0.2 …

As a fellow ALoD sufferer, I am happy to say that a solution DOES exist. Downgrade to 2.0.1, jailbreak, and install OpenSSH. The next time you get the ALoD, SSH in and rename your Applications folder to Applications2. The iPhone will then boot up properly, but most of your apps will appear to be missing. Don't worry, they're still there! Rename the app folder back to Applications, and in iTunes, tick ONE of the apps that is currently not ticked but that you know is installed on the phone. Sync, and voila! All of your apps are there and working!

(on a side note, I find it utterly PATHETIC that Apple has FORCED me to jailbreak my iPhone 3G just to avoid having to restore on a near-daily basis. Morons.)

Hmm yup, my Touch was as stable as a calculator on version 1 firmware. Since updating to version 2 is has been crash after crash after crash. I'm getting sick of it.

I'm also getting sick of downloading 250mb of data every two weeks for simple "bug fixes".

My iphone crashes when downloading apps over wifi. I get the Apple of death screen and I have to restore it! The keyboard basically never works the same anymore either! Hopefully they fix these problems…it's starting to feel like I have a Microsoft product!

Hopfully it fixed my service that is suppordly perfect in my area according to AT&T. Not likely but we'll see when I get home
